Former Police Chief Honored by County

Mike Gallagher awards proclamation to Charles Goss on behalf of Cuyahoga County Council

Safety Director Charles Goss was honored by Cuyahoga County Monday night for his years of services as a Strongsville police officer. County Councilman Mike Gallagher delivered a proclamation to Goss following his retirement as police chief. "I really treat these (proclamations) almost like gold," Gallagher said. "They only go to people who truly should be recognized." He said Goss "has touched lives in a community he has so proudly served" for 34 years. "Charlie is a role model and mentor to many," Gallagher said. Goss retired from the police department at the end of September and was subsequently appointed safety director by Mayor Tom Perciak.

HOW DOES THE MAYOR JUSTIFY CREATING JOB THAT HE WAS GETTING PAID $40,000 A YEAR FOR THE RETIRED POLICE CHIEF AND PAY HIM $100,000 A YEAR FOR THE SAME JOB AND THEN TURN AROUND AND ASK CITY WORKERS TO PAY MORE FOR HEALTH INSURANCE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW OUR CITY ALLOWS THIS KIND OF SPENDING TO HAPPEN WHEN OUR CITY DEPARTMENT IS A VERY GOOD ONE AND DO THEIR JOBS VERY DELIGENTLY. THIS IS NOT …   more ›

City Council Candidates Line Up for Ward Seats

Mayor unopposed, but primaries set in three races

With one day left for candidates to file for municipal offices in Strongsville, Mayor Tom Perciak remains unopposed. Also running alone -- so far -- is Council President Mike Daymut, who represents Ward 1. But there will be primary elections in Wards 2, 3 and 4, where multiple candidates are seeking election, according to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. A five-way primary is shaping up in Ward 2, where incumbent Ray Haseley faces opposition from Nathan Prahst, Matthew Schonhut, William White and Anthony Zubek. In Ward 3, where long-time incumbent Mark Roth has said he will not seek re-election, three candidates have filed as of today -- Jim Carbone, Larry Frawley and Tom McMillen. Three candidates have also filed petitions for the …

Pat Coyne's Appointment Makes Minor Waves at Meeting

Republican leader criticizes decision to return councilman to committees.

A move to return Councilman at large Pat Coyne to committee leadership almost went by unmentioned at Monday's City Council meeting, but a Strongsville Republican made sure it didn't. John Motley, secretary and ward leader for the Strongsville Republican Club, criticized Council President Mike Daymut for allowing Coyne to serve on council committees. "Awarding appointments to a member under suspicion of corrupt and unethical behavior is the equivalent of sanctioning this behavior and an insult to the good citizens of our city," Motley said during the public comments portion of the meeting. Coyne was removed from all committees in September by former Council President Mike Gallagher after he was implicated in the ongoing Cuyahoga County …

Scott Maloney is New Ward 4 Councilman

Unexpired term runs till the end of 2011

Scott Maloney became the newest member of City Council Tuesday night, claiming the Ward 4 seat vacated by Michael Gallagher. Maloney, 43, took the oath of office less than 24 hours after his resignation from the Strongsville Board of Education took effect.  The school district is seeking applicants to fill his unexpired term. Deadline to apply is Jan. 21. One of Maloney's first goals as a councilman: seek election to the seat to which he was appointed. Maloney has already taken out petitions to run for a full four-year term, as have Patricia Pell, who was one of the six people to apply for appointment to the seat, and Steven Sinisgalli. "I'm planning to get out and be as visible as I can," Maloney said Tuesday night.  His first goals in …

Scott Maloney Will Fill Vacant Ward 4 Council Seat

District seeks candidates to replace him on school board

City Council has been planning to announce the new Ward 4 council representative at its meeting Jan. 18, but the cat jumped out of the bag Thursday night when Scott Maloney resigned from his school board seat to accept the council post. Maloney, 43, who has served on the Strongsville Board of Education since 2007, was one of six candidates to apply for the Ward 4 council seat vacated by Mike Gallagher, who is now on the Cuyahoga County Council. Maloney said he sought the council seat as a way to expand the areas in which he can serve the community. "I thought it would be an exciting challenge," he said. The school board is seeking a replacement to serve Maloney's unexpired term, which runs through the end of 2011. Interested candidates can…

Mike Daymut is New City Council President

Mark Roth takes over as president pro tem

Ward 1 Councilman Mike Daymut was unanimously elected the new president of City Council by his peers Monday night. Ward 3 Councilman Mark Roth got the nod for council president pro tem, meaning he will fill in when Daymut cannot attend a meeting. They replace former Ward 4 Councilman Mike Gallagher, who resigned to start duties on the new Cuyahoga County Council, and Councilman at large Joe DeMio, who served as pro tem last year. Council elects members to both positions at its organizational meeting every year. Daymut, whose duties include presiding at council meetings, said he was happy to accept the leadership role. "It's an honor to serve, as it always is in the city of Strongsville," he said. Daymut, as council president, will make …

Council To Pick New Leader

Organizational meeting is Monday night

City Council's organizational meeting Monday night may not sound all that interesting, but key appointments are made during the annual session. This year, council members must decide who will replace former Ward 4 Councilman Mike Gallagher, who left to serve in his newly elected role on the Cuyahoga County Council, as City Council president. Council members are also charged with electing a council president pro tem, choosing council representatives to the Planning Commission and Strongsville City School Board, and setting up standing committees for the year. Also on Monday's agenda is the oath of office for Steve Kilo, who is leaving his  post as recreation director to become the city's new director of human resources. The organizational …

No New Applications Taken for Ward 4 Council Seat

Committee votes not to extend deadline for candidates to replace Mike Gallagher

City Council won't extend the deadline for Ward 4 residents to apply for the seat left vacant by Mike Gallagher. Council members who comprise an ad hoc search committee to fill the open seat voted 3-0 Thursday afternoon against re-opening the position to new applicants  despite objections from Ward 3 Councilman Mark Roth, who said he believed many would-be candidates failed to apply because they assumed the deadline was Jan. 31. Gallagher resigned effective Jan. 31 to assume his duties Jan. 1 as an elected member of the new Cuyahoga County Council. "I thought it was a very short (application) window, and a lot of people missed that window," Roth said. Roth said he believes Ward 4 residents should have until Jan. 31 to apply for the post, …
