Ohio Highway Patrol Arrests Hundreds on 'All Out Days'

Intensive 3-day action takes criminals off the roads

The Ohio State Highway Patrol conducted “All Out Days” Nov. 8-10, sending all officers from all ranks out to patrol the roads to remove the criminal element. The initiative also aimed to reduce fatal and injury crashes. During that time, troopers made 119 drug arrests and 33 felony arrests, apprehended 67 wanted individuals and initiated 82 criminal cases. In addition, they arrested 281 impaired drivers. During one traffic stop in Ashtabula County on Nov. 9, troopers seized 36 pounds of hydroponic marijuana, worth an estimated $230,000. The driver, David Elliot, 63, of Lake Oswego, OR, was incarcerated in the Ashtabula County Jail and charged with trafficking in marijuana and possession of marijuana, both third-degree felonies.  Less …

Driving Out of County? Troopers Will be Watching

Highway Patrol launches enforcement effort to curtail fatal accidents

Traffic fatalities in Ohio are up 12 percent this year, prompting the Ohio Highway Patrol to take action. The patrol will send out three traveling tactical squads to target crash-causing traffic offenses. The summer-long initiative will be a high-visibility enforcement effort. It will use data on past crashes, including the days and times most of the crashes are occurring, to determine where and when to patrol.  “We hope to combat the rising fatalities by patrolling areas during the days and times when they are most dangerous,” Col. John Born, Patrol superintendent, said in a news release. Born urges drivers to stay focused and wear safety belts. Maps illustrating the high-crash areas around the state are available at statepatrol.ohio.gov…

Texting While Driving? You're Distracted 5 Seconds, Study Shows

Ohio Highway Patrol says to keep your eyes on road, hands on wheel, focus on driving

Sending or receiving text messages takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, according to a bulletin released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. At 55 mph, that's the equivalent of driving the length of a football field.  Distracted driving caused 31,231 crashes and killed 74 people in Ohio between 2009 and 2011, the Patrol said.  “Every single time someone takes their eyes or their focus off the road - even for just a few seconds - they put their lives and the lives of others in danger,” Col. John Born, Patrol superintendent, said in a news release. “Distracted driving is unsafe, irresponsible and in a split second, its consequences can be devastating." And just because Ohio doesn't have a law banning texting while…

Five Tips to Keep You Safe on Snowy Roads

Tips provided by Ohio Highway Patrol and FEMA

This winter weather has been a bust so far, but you all know that we're going to get blasted eventually, and there's nothing better than being prepared. Ohio Highway Patrol reports from December 2010 through March 2011, 37,429 crashes happened on snow, ice or slush covered roads, killing 46 people and injuring 7,844. Speed was reported as the main cause in 77 percent of these crashes. The state Highway Patrol and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have offered some tips for driving safely in the snow and items you should keep in your car in case of an emergency. • Allow extra time to get to your destination, maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and the traffic ahead, pay close attention to bridges and overpasses …

Good tips. And the people who are afraid to drive and go ridiculously slow are as dangerous as the ones who think they can go full speed. But some patience is needed. I had someone ride up on me the other day and flash lights when I was going about 60 mph in the snow and I was going to pass someone in 10-15 seconds. I wasn't going to change lanes through a bunch of crap twice in a short time just…   more ›

Extra Patrols Will be Out This Weekend

Troopers will focus on impaired drivers over the holiday

Here'a a somber statistic: Last year, in the three-day period between Dec. 24 and Dec. 26, 14 people were killed on Ohio's roadways. Four of those deaths were alcohol-related, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The patrol will be out in full force this Christmas, trying to keep fatalities in 2011 to a record low. “The holidays can be one of the most dangerous times of the year due to an increase in impaired driving,” Colonel John Born, Patrol superintendent, said in a news release. “Last year during the holiday weekend, troopers arrested 226 drivers for impaired driving.” Last year, fatalities increased to 1,080 over a record low of 1,022 in 2009. As part of national holiday enforcement efforts, the Department of Public Safety’s …

Highway Patrol Releases Video on Dangers of Impaired Driving

Footage shows actual DUI arrest.

The Ohio Highway Patrol, anticipating heavier than usual traffic over the Thanksgiving weekend, has released a video that could dampen some enthusiasm for holiday spirits. The 8-minute video shows compelling footage from actual traffic stops. A preview can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDE8g7Wy8o0. Strongsville Detective Lt. John Janowski said police expect more traffic and some additional drinking around Thanksgiving, and especially the night before. "Wednesday night before Thanksgiving is traditionally a big bar night," Janowski said. Last Thanksgiving weekend, 10 people were killed on Ohio's roadways, with 30 percent of those crashes due to impairment.  Between Thanksgiving and New Year's, 39 people typically die in crashes…

Highway Patrol Goes After Impaired Drivers

Fatalities down this year as troopers step up enforcement

The Ohio Highway Patrol, which launched a Trooper Shield effort this year to target impaired driving, reports that traffic fatalities are down 9 percent. Through October of this year, fatalities caused by motor vehicle crashes in Ohio are down when compared to the same period last year – with 824 deaths so far in 2011 and 902 in 2010. In addition, the Patrol has arrested 934 more drivers for driving impaired when compared to the same time period in 2010. Last year, 40 percent of all fatal crashes were OVI-related. “Our troopers are out on the roads everyday trying to make Ohio a safer place to live, work and travel,” Col. John Born, Patrol superintendent, said in a news release. “We are encouraged that – statewide - traffic crash …

Is 'BC Bud' Marijuana Making Inroads Here?

Highly potent strain is showing up in the area

Two men from New York are facing felony drug charges after Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers seized five pounds of BC Bud marijuana, valued at $25,000, during a traffic stop last week on the Ohio Turnpike. In a separate incident, a third man from New Jersey was also arrested yesterday with $50,000 of BC Bud. BC Bud marijuana is one of the most potent strains of cannabis, which is usually cultivated in British Columbia. It has a THC content of 30 percent, compared to 4 percent in traditional marijuana. It has typically been found in California, Washington, Oregon and other northwestern states. Detective Lt. John Janowski said police in Strongsville have not yet encountered the potent drug.  But it has turned up twice now in adjacent Lorain…

Major Drug Busts Made on the Highways

Strongsville's narcotics-sniffing dogs aid efforts locally

The Ohio State Highway Patrol seized millions of dollars worth of cocaine, heroin, pills and marijuana during three traffic stops on the Ohio Turnpike in the last few weeks, one in neighboring Lorain County. On Oct. 4, troopers stopped a Buick for following too close in Lorain County. A drug dog found a kilo of cocaine and half-kilo of heroin, each worth $100,000, and 181 Xanax pills valued at $1,000 in the car. The driver and passenger, both of Michigan, face felony charges. The next day, toopers stopped a Toyota for speeding near Sandusky and found 20 pounds of hydroponic marijuana valued at $100,000. The driver, of Lorain, was charged with two third-degree felonies. The most massive seizure came Sept. 8 when troopers pulled over a motor…

Drink and Drive? Don't Even Think about It

Police will be out in force over the holiday weekend

Last Memorial Day weekend, 11 people were killed on Ohio roadways, and six of them -- more than half -- were involved in alcohol-related crashes.  The Ohio State Highway Patrol has a message for would-be impaired drivers: Don't do it. Troopers will be working alongside local law enforcement officers in an effort to have a weekend free of fatal crashes.  Memorial Day weekend is traditionally a dangerous holiday period on Ohio roads, particularly for impaired driving crashes. “Each day, over two million miles are driven by impaired motorists and their poor choices severely threaten the well-being of every citizen in the state,” Col. John Born, superintendent of the patrol, said in a news release. While the patrol keeps tabs on the freeways, …
