Teachers' Strike in Strongsville Day 12: Attendance Up in Schools; Rally Set for Friday

Parents expected to gather at City Commons from 3-7 p.m.

Attendance in Strongsville schools has been steadily increasing as the teachers' strike ends its second week. Assistant Superintendent Cameron Ryba said student attendance was at 83 percent on Monday, 85 percent Tuesday and 87 percent on Wednesday. As of Wednesday, there were 240 substitute teachers in the classrooms, with about 20 more expected to start work on Thursday. "We're averging 20-some new substitutes per day," Ryba said. Counter-Strike Rally Set A group of parents is expected to meet on the City Commons from 3-7 p.m. Friday for what they are calling a peaceful rally against the strike. According to the group's Facebook page, people will gather with signs to support getting teachers back in classrooms. A post on the site says …

That's fine, but the older teachers shouldn't keep getting getting raises because thye are well, older. In most professions, one reaches journeyman status after about 10,000 hours. After that, raises are not automatic. With teachers under the union the system is rigged so the raises seem to go on forever. And stop this $68,000 stuff. The BOE pats about $38,000,000 for the contracts of about 383 …   more ›

Protests Resume at Board Members' Homes; Teachers from Other Districts Recruited to Help

Regional union leader asks members from nearby schools to assist in demonstrations

Teachers are again staging protests in front of Strongsville School Board members' homes -- but this time, the protestors may not teach in Strongsville. On Wednesday evening, a group of demonstrators gathered in front of board member Carl Naso's house. On Tuesday, there was reportedly a group in front of Board President David Frazee's home. But unlike the first time union members gathered at board members' homes, this time the teachers may not be Strongsville employees. The North Eastern Ohio Education Association put out a memo to teachers in nearby districts, seeking volunteers to hold candlelight vigils at the Strongsville school board's homes. The memo said the vigils would help pressure the board back to the negotiating table. It …

The SEA has crossed so many lines, but this one seems past the point of no return. I would love an SEA rep or Mrs. Linscott herself explain the necessity of tombstones and coffins at these "peaceful" demonstrations. I am also appalled that the OEA sent out emails requesting the presence of teachers from other communities at these private residences. How many ethical violations are these people …   more ›

Teachers' Union Wants Meeting with All 5 School Board Members

No talks are scheduled in second week of strike

The Strongsville Education Association has reportedly asked to negotiate with the full School Board, but an attorney representing the district said no. A news release from the SEA, which represents the 383 striking teachers, guidance counselors and psychologists, says the union asked to set up a bargaining session with all five Board of Education members during a meeting Monday night with a federal mediator. “The SEA asked for a negotiations session that includes all five board members,” SEA President Tracy Linscott said in the release. “The board’s counsel refused this request.”  The meeting Monday, which lasted more than three hours, produced no results, both sides said. At the session were Superintendent John Krupinski and the …

Here is the home that Tracy Linscott (a 9th grade reading teacher and head of the teachers union lives in)... It is valued at over $400,000... She wants to give out the home phones and address of the School Board to organize a "candle light vigil" at their house.... I wonder how much she would like it if people did this at her house in front of her family... I am not trying to organize anything …   more ›

Strongsville Teachers Won't Honor Substitutes' Grades During Strike

Meanwhile, School Board will make 'last best offer' as talks continue Saturday

With negotiations continuing in a mediator's office Saturday afternoon, the Strongsville Education Association has issued a statement saying teachers will not honor any grades issued by substitutes during a strike. The SEA, in a news release, condemned the Board of Education's plan to teach only "meat and potato" classes like math, science, social studies and English during the looming teachers' strike. No grades given by the replacement teachers will count, Christine Canning, SEA spokeswoman, said in a news release. “We are not going to honor grades issued by unqualified substitutes who don’t know the material they have been randomly assigned to 'teach' and can’t pass the tests and quizzes they will be attempting to grade,” Canning said…

Exactly, spoiled brats. If a kid works hard, he does not get the grade that he earned. Or better yet, a kid may chose to read this and determine that he can do nothing until the teachers come back.   more ›

Teachers, School Board Trade Jabs

Emotions run high in Strongsville after strike notice is filed

More than 300 Strongsville teachers and supporters jammed a tension-filled School Board meeting Thursday, hours after the Strongsville Education Association filed an 10-day strike notice. If an agreement on a new contract is not reached by March 3, teachers will strike March 4. A negotiating session is set for today, and another is tentatively scheduled for Monday. Developments in the situation Thursday: SEA Holds Press Conference The nearly 400 members of the SEA met in the auditorium at Strongsville High School, where they overwhelmingly took a vote of "no confidence" in the school board. SEA President Tracy Linscott said the board has "continually failed to properly fund the district" and is now going to "build buildings the district …

Strongsville Teachers' Union Launches Website

New site explains what a 'fair contract' means, monitors progress of negotiations

The Strongsville Education Association has created a website that provides the teachers' position on on-going contract negotiations. The site tracks the union's journey through the process and explains what teachers are looking for when they say they want "a fair and equitable" contract: • Enough time in the school day to plan lessons, meet one-on-one with students, grade papers, respond to parents' questions and handle other duties. • Manageable class sizes. • Keeping art, music and physical education classes intact at the elementary schools. • The ability to attract and retain quality teachers. • Respect as valued professionals. The site also recounts seven negotiating sessions between July 9 and Jan. 29, noting "No Progress" after …

So the newest casualty caused by the teachers is the students ability to participate in college accredited coursed. If the strike is still active next week when the parent meeting was to be held (the schools are under lockdown before/after school for sure next week) the meeting will not take place which - according to what our "beloved" (and I use that term lightly) teachers are telling the kids…   more ›

Teachers, School Board May Be Close to Agreement on Contract

Proposal reportedly submitted after recent negotiating session

Contract negotiations between Strongsville teachers and the Board of Education are reportedly in the final stages, with an agreement expected soon. Teachers have been working without a contract since the end of July as on-again, off-again talks have dragged on. There is no official word yet on terms of the deal, but a Strongsville Patch reader who identified himself/herself as "teacher" posted this comment Friday, Feb. 11: "Funny, what the board is offering and what the teachers are demanding. Let me set you straight. The teachers have given up A LOT with this contract. They are now going from 2% to 10% on paying health care, they are adding 2 UNPAID days a year, they are taking yet another pay freeze, they are also going to have to do bus…
