Homecoming Attendance as Good as It Gets

Four days of nice weather kept crowds flocking to festival

On a good year, Strongsville Chamber of Commerce officials estimate 50,000 people flock to the City Commons during the four days of the Strongsville Homecoming. This year? "I'm sure we had that, if not more," said Amy Ferree, executive director of the chamber. "We had very large numbers beecause of the weather." Because there is no admission fee, exact attendance can't be tracked. "It's all weather-driven," Ferree said. "If it's rainy, people don't come, and if it's too hot and human, they stay in the air conditioning." This year -- unlike last year, when the Commons became a muddy mess -- rain wasn't an issue. Thousands lined Pearl Road Friday evening for the Spirit of Strongsville Homecoming Parade, then overflowed the City Commons for rides, food, games and a concert by Disco Inferno. The 70th annual Strongsville Homecoming, sponsored by the Strongsville Chamber of Commerce, runs through Saturday. Ride tickets are $17 for an all-day pass. Homecoming Parade is Tonight

Festival gets under way this afternoon

The 39th annual "Spirit of Strongsville" Homecoming Parade will step off today at 6:30 p.m. The parade, co-sponsored by Fifth Third Bank, will leave from Progress Drive and head south on Pearl Road to the City Commons. Rides on the Strongsville Homecoming midway open at 3 p.m. today. After the parade, there will be free entertainment by Disco Inferno. Ride tickets are $17 for an all-day pass. Register Now for 5K Run, 1-Mile Walk at Homecoming

Cleveland Clinic will sponsor race on Saturday, July 21

Cleveland Clinic Strongsville Family Health and Surgery Center annual Race for Wellness 5K Run / 1-Mile Walk on Saturday, July 21 as part of the Strongsville Homecoming. The race starts at the Strongsville Communication Center, 13213 Pearl Rd. The run and walk begin at 9 a.m., with on-site registration starting at 7:30 a.m. Pre-registration deadline is July 18, but participants are welcome to register on race day. Soggy + Steamy = Poor Attendance at Strongsville Homecoming

Weather causes number of visitors at four-day festival to nosedive

Attendance at the Strongsville Homecoming was "dramatically down" this year due to the weather, according to organizer Tom Burichin. "We had two days of unbelievable, record heat followed by two days of torrential rain and thunderstorms," Burichin said. Temperatures were in the 90s last Wednesday and Thursday, the first two days of the Strongsville Chamber of Commerce's annual festival.  On Friday and Saturday, thunderstorms dumped inches of water on the area, flooding roads and some basements and sending Homecoming crowds home early. "You work all year to prepare and get ready," said Burichin, who heads the planning committee for the event. "But you can't control the weather." Update: Afternoon Entertainment Canceled at Strongsville Homecoming

The festival fun continues with rides, food, games and entertainment

Some of the afternoon entertainment at Strongsville Homecoming has been canceled due to the rain. The Strongsville Library posted on its Facebook page that entertainment on the stage has been canceled. The Strongsville Dance Company, which was supposed to perform at 1 p.m., made a similar Facebook post. Strongsville Patch will keep you updated as information becomes available. Today is Kids Day at the Strongsville Homecoming. Rides are $17 for an all-day pass; individual ride tickets will also be available.
