Women's League launches annual get-fit program with health fair
Thinking about joining Strongsville Weighs Less this year? Then check out the Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center. The event, sponsored by Strongsville Women's League, will feature health-focused vendors and Southwest General Health Center, which will provide free screenings for body mass index, weight, blood glucose and blood pressure. Participants will weigh in (in a private setting) at the health fair. Strongsville Weighs Less is designed to motivate participants to get in shape and lose weight with the support of others and a series of motivational health-related talks by local experts. Research shows good nutrition and exercise can help prevent breast cancer
You might be able to find help fighting breast cancer and other types of cancers at your local grocery store and fitness centers, according to the research findings of Dr. Marian Neuhouser, Ph.D, RD. Dr. Neuhouser is a nutritional epidemiologist with a background in nutritional sciences. She is an investigator at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Her research is focused on lifestyle factors such as nutrition and physical activity. Some factors may prevent breast and prostate cancer and improve survivorship in those diagnosed with cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, more than 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 American women will die …

Anchors A-Weigh will recognize winners of weight loss contest, too
Strongsville Women's League will host its annual spring event, called Anchors A-Weigh, April 21 at the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center. The party runs 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. and features a cash bar for wine, beer or martinis; a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and casual cruise attire. The winners of the Strongsville Weighs Less contest will also be announced and recognized. Tickets are $30 and available by calling 440-238-0950.

Lots of people sign up to get in shape together
Pat Beran doesn't have any specific weight-loss goals -- she just wants to get healthier. So she signed up for Strongsville Weighs Less, a get-fit program offered for the second year by the Strongsville Women's League. "I thought, a new year, a new start," Beran said. "Also, my neighbor won it last year, so that was incentive." On Saturday, 119 people showed up at the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center for their initial weigh-in. Dozens more came in for a second-chance sign-up Monday night. The program is designed to give residents the information and motivation to start eating better and exercising. Winners announced in get-fit contest
The results are in for Strongsville Weighs Less, a citywide get-fit initiative sponsored by the Strongsville Women's League, and it appears nearly everyone ended up losing weight and getting at least a bit healthier. Overall, the 153 participants lost 4 percent of their collective body weight, according to Beverly Kenworthy, who organized the initiative. "The people who were in it said they liked it and felt it was helpful," Kenworthy said. The program started with a weigh-in back in January and included a series of talks and demonstrations on healthy eating and exercise. Stongsville Women's League presents annual fundraiser
More than 200 people danced and partied the night away at Celebrate & Dance to the Music, presented by the Stongsville Women's League at the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center April 16. In addition to dancing, the event featured an auction, raffles, music, martinis by Shinto, smoothies by Bartenza and food from Don's Pomeroy House, Trivs, Busy Bakers, Riverstone Taverne, J. Bella, Sweet Mango, The Bier Haus, Cleats, Bianca's, Italian Village, Chipotle, Palate Restaurant and Lounge, Gina's Pizza, Mad Cactus and Olympia Candy.
