Giant Eagle Seeks to Build on Strongsville Golf Property, Close SouthPark Store

New supermarket would be 'signature store'

Giant Eagle wants to build a 92,600-square-foot supermarket at the Strongsville Golf property on Pearl Road and close its existing store next to Westfield SouthPark. Company officials said there isn't room to expand the existing store on Royalton Road. Instead, the Pittsburgh-based grocery chain wants to clear 13.5 acres that are now occupied by Strongsville Golf, Honey Hut Ice Cream and a residence and construct a "signature store" that would be about 25,000 square feet larger than the current one. There would also be a Get Go gas station on the site. Attorney Nick Catanzarite, who represents Giant Eagle in its project here, said the company is also in negotiations to buy a vacant 6-acre parcel just south of Strongsville Golf. "The (Pearl…

Don't care -- don't shop there! I have found that the money I save in groceries more than compensates from what I lose in "gas" perks! However, I have to agree that there is undeveloped land that should be used -- the traffic is crazy enough that way, even with the four lanes.   more ›

Council Approves Raises for Elected, Appointed Officials

Mayor, council members, department heads to receive 3 percent hikes in January

City Council has OK'd pay raises for itself, the mayor and other Strongsville officials and employees. The 3 percent hikes were approved without discussion Monday. The vote was 6-0, with Ward 3 Councilman Mark Roth dissenting. Council President Mike Daymut said council routinely awards the same raises to administrators, elected officials and non-union employees as those negotiated in contracts with union employees. "It's something we do every year," Daymut said. The measure takes the salary of Mayor Tom Perciak from $131,185 to $135,120 starting Jan. 1. City Council salaries will go from the current $18,293 to $18,841; council president pro tem will receive $19,467 and the council president will be paid $20,091 a year. The salary ordinance…

City will Save $800,000 by Refinancing Library Bonds

Lower interest rates will spell the difference

Strongsville officials, who recently refinanced debt on the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center to save $1.6 million in interest, are doing the same thing with library bonds to save about half that amount. City Council voted last week to issue a $2.6 million note on the remaining library debt. The city will get a .5 percent interest rate -- and with it the ability to pay off the debt five years early, saving an estimated $800,000. Mayor Tom Perciak said he was leery about switching long-term debt for short-term, but said indicators show it's the wisest move. ""When you see where the market is going . . . we have some comfort in knowing the rates are going to stay low," Perciak said. The city could refinance with long-term bonds, but the rate is now…

City to Draft Plan for Next 10 Years

A lot has changed since last update in 1996

The city will draft a new 10-year comprehensive plan that will show where Strongsville hopes to be a decade from now. City Council agreed Tuesday to pay Robert Hill $14,250 to update the last plan, which was ratified in 2001. Hill serves as the city's planner on a consulting basis. "There's a lot of land this is potentially going to impact," Ward 4 Councilman Scott Maloney said. In the plan, Hill promises to cover population and housing statistics from the 2010 U.S. Census, land use and transportation patterns, and come up with goals and objectives for 2021, including a map showing future land uses. He said he expects to be done with the plan in three months. Ward 3 Councilman Mark Roth objected to paying Hill extra money for drafting the …

Restaurants May Get to Have Parking Lot Parties

Councilman asks city to relax rules on clambakes, Oktoberfests for eateries

If a Strongsville restaurant wants to have an outdoor festival -- a two-day Mexican fiesta, say, or a clambake -- it's out of luck. The city doesn't allow it. But Councilman at large Joe DeMio is asking city administrators to change the law to give restaurants a chance -- once a year only -- to have a special outdoor event. "I've had two calls, and I've had to say no because there's no ordinance on our books," DeMio said. Mayor Tom Perciak said the city gets frequent requests from businesses, including Westfield SouthPark mall, for outdoor festivals. "We don't want carnival rides there," Perciak said. "It's a place of business." And Assistant Law Director Dan Kolick said he fears the city would then have to open up the option to all city …

Duke Southworth Takes Over At-Large City Council Seat

Appointment ends Pat Coyne era in Strongsville government

Duke Southworth took the oath of office Monday evening, filling the at-large City Council seat vacated last month by Pat Coyne. Southworth, a lawyer, said he comes to council with no agenda -- only a  desire to help. "I'm excited, honored and looking forward to turning the page on a sad chapter and going forward," he said. Coyne resigned May 5, three days before he was arrested on suspicion of bribery. He has since pleaded guilty to five felony charges and faces three to four years in prison. Southworth, 38, was chosen from 27 applicants to fill Coyne's unexpired term, which runs through 2013.  A 1991 graduate of St. Ignatius High School, he is a practicing lawyer who owns North Haven Settlements, a structured settlement and financial …

John 'Duke' Southworth to be New At-Large City Council Rep

Will take oath of office Tuesday

John "Duke" Southworth Jr. of Stoughton Drive has been chosen to replace Pat Coyne on Strongsville City Council. Southworth was chosen from 27 applicants to replace Coyne, who resigned May 6 and has since been charged with federal bribery and other counts. The unexpired term runs through 2013.  Southworth, a 1991 graduate of St. Ignatius High School, has a law degree and owns North Haven Settlements, a structured settlement and financial planning firm that assists litigants. He said he applied for the seat because he has come to love Strongsville since moving here in 1998. "Under unfortunate circumstances a seat opened up, and I thought I could help," he said. In the next two years, he said he sees City Council working to build on its …

Charges Against Pat Coyne Go Beyond Bribery

Prosecutors say he tried to swindle an investor just before he was arrested in May

When former Councilman Pat Coyne was arrested earlier this month, it was based on an allegation he had taken $20,000 in bribes from developer Dave Terry. But when formal charges were finally filed Friday, they included other allegations of fraud involving a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop and his former job at the Cuyahoga County Coroner's office. The Krispy Kreme scam took place this spring, while Coyne was already under investigation for taking the bribes, according to prosecutors. Illegal Hiring At the coroner's office, Coyne and others "abused their official positions by exerting influence over county hiring and personnel decisions in return for private gain," the charge says. It says Terry gave Coyne $20,000 for positive influence in Terry…
