Councilman asks for special detail after hearing concerns from residents
The Strongsville Police Department will take a look at ways to make residents in the city's north end feel safer. The issue was raised by Ward 3 Councilman Jim Carbone, who said he has been speaking with residents in the northern part of town who are excited about new business development there, but leery of more crime. "Historically, a lot of our (crime) issues have come from that part of town, because of a few factors, including the clientele at the motels," Carbone said. Police here will join national safety campaign to get motorists to wear seatbelts
Strongsville Police will join the national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization May 20 to June 2. "We'll have extra officers out on the major thoroughfares," Sgt. Mike Grywalsky said. "There will be zero tolerance." Don't think you can sneak by unbuckled in the dark, either. Because nighttime passengers are least likely to buckle up and the most likely to die in crashes, overnight enforcement has become a priority of the Click It or Ticket mobilization. Of those who died in nighttime crashes in 2009, nearly two-thirds (62 percent) were not wearing seat belts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Strongsville will participate again in National Drug Take-Back Day
Strongsville Police will again participate in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 27. Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., residents can drop off unused or expired prescription medication in front of the Strongsville Police Station. Last year, which was the first year the department participated, 308 pounds of medications were collected. Sgt. Mike Grywalsky said the department will again set up a tent in the parking lot to collect the containers. "You don't even have to get out of your car," Grywalsky said. Officers on the lookout for kids cutting class during Strongsville teachers strike
A crackdown on students who are taking advantage of the teachers strike to cut class at Strongsville High School is apparently keeping kids off the streets, an official said. Police Chief James Kobak said late last week that said 11 students have been picked up for truancy since April 2. "To be honest, in a school district this big, that's not bad," Kobak said. "I'm pleasantly surprised." The department put officers on the lookout for truant students after fielding complaints from residents about teens leaving Strongsville High School and hanging around neighborhoods and businesses during the day. Strongsville thief gets 10 years on two counts
The Strongsville man who robbed La Chateau Wine Bar last August has been sentenced to nine years in prison by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Steve Gall. In addition, Dennis K. Klocek, 49, was sentenced to one year incarceration for an unrelated home invasion in Berea, according to Maria Russo, spokeswoman for Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty. Police and prosecutors say Klocek walked into La Chateau prior to opening Aug. 29, approached 58-year-old female employee and brandished a knife. He held the knife to the woman's throat, demanding money. The victim handed over $325 cash. Klocek then forced her to sit in the restroom while he fled. Students found out of class will be apprehended
When classes resume after spring break on Tuesday, Strongsville police will start cracking down on the city's daytime curfew law, taking aim at students who are truant from school. Police Chief Jim Kobak said the department has been fielding a number of complaints during the teachers' strike about kids hanging around neighborhoods and businesses during the day. "We're going to be investigating any student in a public place during school hours," Kobak said. That will include sidewalks and local businesses. Carl Naso calls police after suspicious package shows up at his home
Strongsville School Board member Carl Naso called police March 21 after receiving a package he did not order and finding "inappropriate" items inside, a report said. Police Chief Jim Kobak said the box contained six pornographic DVDs. The return address lists a company in Denver, CO, but so far, police haven't been able to track it down. "I don't think the company exists, but we're still checking," Kobak said. A trace on the package shows it was shipped from Pittsburgh. Kobak said police are still investigating who sent the box. Naso could not be reached for comment. Kobak said the DVDs in the box seemed to be used. "They didn't appear to be brand new," he said. "There was no cellophane on them."
Police said he traveled here twice to meet 15-year-old girl
An Ohio man has been sentenced to prison for having sex with a 15-year-old Strongsville girl he met online. Judge Timothy McCormick sentenced William A. Rose, 41, of Bryan, Ohio, to a 10-year prison term on Monday for acts with the victim, who he met on the Internet through a file sharing program with chatting capabilities. Police and prosecutors say that on Oct. 25, 2012, Rose traveled to Strongsville to meet the victim. Rose took the 15-year-old victim to an area motel where the two engaged in sexual activity. He returned to Strongsville again on Nov. 3, where he and the victim engaged in sexual activity in his van. During the second encounter, Rose photographed the 15-year-old victim in various states of undress. Rose pleaded guilty …

Strongsville police get 2 reports of suspicious driver on March 13
Strongsville police are looking into two reports of a man in a dark-colored truck watching kids as they got off school buses Wednesday. A kindergarten pupil who got off her bus shortly after noon on Fox Hunt Drive reportedly told her mother that a man in an old black truck was taking pictures of kids. Fox Hunt is off Howe Road across from SouthPark Mall. About 3 p.m., kids getting home from school on South Drive noticed a dull navy-colored Chevy S-10 truck parked down the road, with someone seemingly watching them When the driver saw them looking, he took off. Police were unable to find a truck matching the description in the area.

FirstEnergy told Strongsville police it's working on the outage and should have the problem solved shortly.
Lose your power Thursday evening? Not to worry, you're not alone. WKYC tweeted that about 1,200 customers lost electricity, but the good news is, Strongsville Patch readers say the power is coming back on in the city. Police don't quite know how many residences have regained power, but they reported FirstEnergy would have the problem fixed by 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
