Signs come down as Westfield transfers ownership of SouthPark
The big "Westfield" signs came down from the mall entrances this week, signalling the change in ownership. Strongsville's SouthPark mall was one of seven properties Westfield agreed to sell to Starwoood Capital Group for $1.15 billion in April. The mall obviously won't be called Westfield SouthPark any more. The new name hasn't been announced, but it's expected to retain "SouthPark" in some fashion. The 1.6 million-square-foot mall is arguably one of the most successful in the area. It opened in 1996 as SouthPark Center and was sold by the Richard E. Jacobs Group to Westfield in 2002, when it became Westfield SouthPark. Starwood has not announced any changes it plans to make at the mall.

Readers have plenty of suggestions for new owners of Westfield SouthPark
SouthPark mall should bring in a bookstore, a Pottery Barn and a tea room, Strongsville Patch readers suggest. We invited readers Thursday to send a message to Starwood Capital Group, which is buying seven properties from Westfield for $1.15 billion. There has been no official word yet on any changes that might be on the way, so we asked readers for ideas. "Get rid of those kiosk carts in the middle of the mall. They look junky, and especially at the Holidays, when the Sales People jump out at you to harass you to stop. It is a carnival-like atmosphere," Renee wrote. Other proposals: Add an Urban Outfitters, Trader Joe's, computer store, Arhaus, Crate & Barrel, West Elm, an arcade, Bebe, a Nike store and White House Black Market. "Make it …

Great Bear will have 'pies,' but not the kind you're thinking
The first Great Bear Mountain Pie is expected to open here in August. The restaurant will occupy a space in the food court at Westfield SouthPark, next to Mitchell's Ice Cream. But the specialty won't be a regular pie. These are "mountain pies" -- the kind of sandwiches campers cook over an open fire. "People have made these over a campfire for decades. I had an idea to commercialize them, because once you leave the campgrounds, you can't get them," said Gary Medved, who created the concept with his brother, Dave. Medved has invented a type of grill that replicates -- on a large scale -- the tool campers use to make pocket sandwiches out of bread and fillings. At Great Bear Mountain Pie, you'll be able to order one of about five specialty…

Yes, you're right -- but that's not the only place
Westfield SouthPark mall is the riskiest place to leave your car, statistically speaking. But vehicle thefts and attempts were reported at a number of retail stores in Strongsville last year, and also in residential driveways. Of the 23 vehicle thefts or attempted thefts reported to Strongsville police in 2011, five were at the mall. Other locations were TJ Maxx, Panera, Old Navy, Monster Mini Golf, McCarthy'sHome Depot, Walmart and St. John Neumann Church. In residential areas, one report came in from a Whitney Road apartment parking lot and Niagara Drive driveway. Two motorcycles and a motorized scooter were also stolen from neighborhoods. And three plow trucks were taken from industrial areas. So is there anywhere your ride is safe? "…

Dispute started over parking space
Witnesses called police to a fight outside Westfield SouthPark mall about 6 p.m. Saturday after one man pulled a gun on another driver. The man with the gun, 45, of Brunswick, was arrested while still at the mall. He faces an assault charge. Police said the man did not fire the gun, but hit the victim in the head with it. Detective Lt. John Janowski said the dispute started when the suspect, driving a pickup truck, overshot a parking space and tried to back up. The victim, 30, driving behind the truck, refused to back up far enough and instead beeped his horn. The suspect then got out of his truck, pulled out a gun and hit the victim in the head with it. Witnesses ran into Coldwater Creek to ask employees to call 911, a report said. The …

Last day at Westfield SouthPark will be Jan. 28
The Franklin Covey store at Westfield SouthPark is closing this month. Manager Dino Centracchio said in an email that the last day for the business, located on the lower floor near JC Penney, will be Jan. 28. The store has been at the mall 12 years. Centracchio said Franklin Covey is now selling its inventory, most at 40 percent off regular price. In addition, store fixtures and wall units are being sold. Franklin Covey specializes in planners and binders, using a planning system that is modeled in part on the writings of Benjamin Franklin. It also sells briefcases, pens and other office supplies. The company also provides time management and leadership training to businesses. The firm, based in Utah, closes its stores on Sundays. Franklin…
