New Middle School Plans Moving Along

Find out more at public meeting Jan. 10

The Strongville schools will host the first of two public meetings on plans to build a new middle school at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, in the media center at Strongsville High School. Architects will present preliminary plans for the new school, which will be built on the site of the existing Center Middle School and will house all of the district's sixth, seventh and eighth graders. A second meeting is set for Jan. 24. Business Manager Mark Donnelly said school officials have been touring other new schools in the area to get ideas for designing Strongsville's. The district is also forming a committee to look into what type of technology the new middle school, the high school and elementary schools should have. "We're not teaching kids to…

School Bond Issue in Strongsville Passes

Margin is close enough for a recount on Issue 116

Issue 116, the bond issue for the Strongsville schools, has passed by 83 votes, according to final numbers released by the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections show. Official results from the elections board, released Tuesday afternoon, show the issue won 11,530 to 11,447. "We're happy -- we continue to move in a positive direction," Superintendent John Krupinski said. "I'd like to thank the community for their trust in us." The margin is within one-half of 1 percent, which means there will be a recount.  The fate of the issue, which was ahead by 3 votes at the end of Election Day, has been up in the air until late absentee and up to 698 provisional ballots could be counted. "I think this is something everyone's going to embrace," said …

A Closer Look at Schools' $145 Million Plan

Why the district is taking at a two-phased approach to fixing buildings

School officials last week announced a $145 million plan to renovate or rebuild all the district's school buildings over the next few years. The plan is broken into two phases. The first would begin next year, if voters in November approve an $81 million bond issue, and would pay to build a new middle school for grades 6, 7 and 8; make $27 million in improvements to Strongsville High School; make $3.5 million in "critical repairs" to elementary schools; and demolish the Allen, Center and Albion buildings. Phase 2 would follow a few years later. A separate bond issue would pay to build three new elementary schools in Wards 1, 2 and 3; rebuild part of Muraski and renovate Kinsner; and demolish the other elementary buildings. Why no expansion…

$81 Million Bond Issue is Phase 1: Would Build New Middle School, Renovate High School

First step would aim at district's secondary schools

Voters should expect to see an $81 million bond issue on the November ballot that would pay to build a new middle school and make vast renovations to Strongsville High School, plus some safety-related repairs to elementary schools. Major fix-ups at elementary buildings would come in Phase 2 -- a plan that tentatively calls for constructing three new grade schools, renovating Muraski and Kinsner, and demolishing the rest. The two-tiered approach was presented Thursday night by the Strongsville Schools' Facilities Committee. "This (phase 1) would address the critical needs . . . at the high school and middle school," committee member Ken Evans said. Elementary students would be "warm, safe and dry" for now, the plan says, until Phase 2, …

I agree that the schools need more funds to continue operating a superior school system, which they are. Rather than continue increasing the cost to Strongsville home owners, is there a way to tap into the local sales tax. We all have been inconvenienced by the traffic from other communities entering and exiting the Strongsville mall. How about a gross-up to the sales tax to fund our schools? If …   more ›
