City's Rec Employees are Tough Mudders

'The Soggy Dogs' take on grueling 12-mile challenge

They were wet and cold to the bone. Bruised. Exhausted. They faced obstacles that were more like devices of torture. And they can't wait to do it again. Four members of the Strongsville Recreation Department -- Director Bryan Bogre, Parks Superintendent Chris Arold, assistant maintenance foreman Mark Hartze and Don Golak, pool maintenance worker -- ran the Tough Mudder April 14, a 12-mile obstacle course filled with icy water and ridiculously difficult challenges with names like Arctic Enema and Walk the Plank. You'd think they'd have had enough. "We're all already pre-registered for next year," Bogre said. Equipment at Rec Center Getting a Workout

New members flock to facility with good intentions

Regulars at the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center can count on one thing every January. Newbies. "Everyone has their New Year's resolutions," said Don Lambacher, a regular at the rec center. "It's been harder to get on a machine. Sometimes you have to be a little patient." The facility has been hopping for the last week or two, a combination of college kids home for break and people seeking to start the new year by getting in better shape. "There are so many new faces this week," Recreation Director Bryan Bogre said earlier this week. "We have 18 treadmills and today, I got the last one. Usually, you can take your pick." Yep, you can tell the newbies because they come in pairs and tend to talk throughout their workouts. It's nice to see people trying to get healthy, but I do look forward to the drop-off in February!   more ›
