Crime Rate in Strongsville Stays About the Same, FBI Statistics Show

But local officials question the value of annual report

Crime in Strongsville last year stayed about the same as in 2009, according to the FBI's newly released Uniform Crime Reports, although the city's police chief questions the relevance of those figures. According to the FBI's annual report called Crime in the United States, the number of burglaries in Strongsville dropped last year to 76. There were 87 in 2009. Thefts went up from 655 to 670, but violent crime dropped from 15 to 11, robberies from 8 to 6, property crime from 770 to 767 and motor vehicle theft from 28 to 20. But those numbers are significantly different from those kept locally for the police department's annual report. Why? Different definitions. "The numbers we keep are accurate," Police Chief Charles Goss said. Each state …

Car Stolen from Webster Road Recovered in Berea after Chase

The following information was provided by the Strongsville police department

Two Webster Road residents had their cars entered early July 6, while a third woke up to find his was gone. The resident told police he went to bed about 11 the previous night, leaving the keys in the vehicle. It was gone when he got up at 6:30 a.m. When Strongsville police entered the vehicle into the system as stolen, they discovered it had already been recovered by Berea police.  Detective Lt. John Janowski said Berea officers stopped the driver after a chase. He said the driver has denied stealing the car, saying he got it from someone else at the Islander Apartments. Janowski said police don't know if that man is also a suspect in two car break-ins on Webster Road.  "He didn't have anything with him that was taken from the cars," …

Woman Claiming to Be Kidnapped Winds up Facing Charges

The following information was provided by the Strongsville police department

A woman called for help early June 19, claiming she was being held hostage in a car and sending police officers up and down Interstate 71 searching for her. In the end, the woman was the only one arrested. A report said the woman called dispatchers about 12:30 a.m., saying she was in a car on southbound I-71 and being held hostage by a Hispanic man and woman. She then hung up, saying they knew she was on the phone. A dispatcher called back and the woman said she couldn't answer questions because her captors had knives. But she then said they were pulling into TGI Friday's on Royalton Road; she said she was running away and the man was chasing her. Police arrived to find all of them standing in the parking lot -- the kidnappers confused and…

Strongsville Police Blotter: Trash Pickers Eyed in Two Thefts

The following information was provided by the Strongsville police department

The theft of an electric scooter on Needlewood Circle and a hedge trimmer on Commons Oval could be vaguely related in that in both cases, trash pickers were mentioned as possible culprits. The scooter was taken during the night of June 12. The victim pointed out it was trash night and said the month-old scooter, valued at $120, could have picked up by scrappers. The hedge trimmer disappeared about 6 p.m. June 13, when a resident leaned it against a light pole and went inside for a while.  There, too, it was garbage day eve and the trimmer could have caught the eye of a passing picker. Food Fight with House is a Crime Vandals threw food at a Colleen Court house early June 16, but it wasn't just innocent mischief. A report said two of the …

Strongsville Police Blotter: Woman Sitting in Trunk Draws Attention

The following arrest information was supplied by the Strongsville police department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Police have been called at least four times in the last week by people concerned about a woman sitting in the trunk of her car. The woman was seen May 21 on The Bluffs, May 24 at Walmart and twice on May 25 at Panera on Royalton Road. The woman told police May 21 she needed someplace quiet to sit and would be moving on soon. At Walmart, a witness said the woman would sit in the trunk, drive around the lot for awhile, then get back into her trunk. At Panera the next day, a concerned employee called police about 9 a.m. to check on the woman, who agreed to leave. Employees called back at 1:20 p.m. to say the woman had moved her car four times, but had never left. She told officers she uses trunk-sitting as a coping mechanism and had had a bad…

It's Vandalism Season in Northeast Ohio

Warm weather has already brought out youngsters for nighttime pranks -- and worse

One night last week, some drivers on Colleen Court and Waterford Parkway found plastic wrap stretched across the roadway.  The week before, the clear wrap -- apparently intended to trip up cars as they drive through it -- was strung on Cardinal Circle and Homestead Park.  On Saratoga Trail, a resident reported someone knocked down his mailbox and egged his house. And on Whitney Road, a resident awoke to find someone had spread feces -- apparently human -- all over his car. Welcome to springtime in Strongsville. "Lately, we've also had a lot of spray-painting," Strongsville police Lt. John Janowski said. "That just started up a few weeks ago." The list of mischief goes on an on, from the mild -- doorbells rung in the middle of the night, …

Burglary, Other Crimes Stay Steady in 2010; Thefts Decrease

Police report small dips in some offenses; others rise slightly

Police were busier last year than they were in 2009, but the actual number of crimes stayed about the same. The department's annual report shows officers responded to 25,132 calls in 2010, 2,307 more than the previous year. But the increase in calls was largely due to motor vehicle accidents, alarms going off, residents seeking help with car lockouts and lost or found property, the report shows. Thefts from vehicles, vandalism, assaults, breaking and entering and weapons offenses all dipped a bit in 2010, while shoplifting, liquor violations and thefts from yards went up. Some numbers:  Robbery -- 12 (9 in 2009); assault -- 102; (105 in 2009); menacing -- 73 (76); arson -- 2 (4); burglary 96 (95); breaking and entering -- 29 (36); auto …
