Hey, Kids -- Learn How to Make a Movie at the Library

Special sessions will teach teens how to make a mythical film

Cuyahoga County Public Library and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History are inviting students in grades 6–12 to create the next Godzilla. Beginning in March, the library will offer “Mythical Movie Making” in several branch locations. In these free hands-on video creation classes, participants will learn the basics of digital movie-making. Their videos will be entered into Natural History Museum's Mythic Creatures in Cleveland Video Contest. A session is set for 6 p.m. April 4 at the Strongsville branch.  Teens should bring digital images or video clips of mysterious local landscapes, dragon lairs, Lake Erie mermaids or urban unicorns. Library's summer program is open to kids and adults

Read a book, win a prize? You just might in the Cuyahoga County Public Library's 2011 Summer Reading Program.   The program, which runs June 4 to Aug. 6, is open to all ages. In the Loop — In this satirical and dark comedy, an innocent comment that war is inevitable starts a furious behind-the-scenes battle between politicians on both sides of the Atlantic. Some old gangster and suspense movies and a drama highlight this week's picks, courtesy of Joseph Jones of the Strongsville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. Greatest Gangster Films Collection: Prohibition Era — Before The Godfather or Goodfellas there were the gangster movies of the 1930s. Here are four of the better ones starring such screen legends as Edgar G. Robinson, James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart. Everything that has come since can trace their roots here. Hammer Films: Icons of Suspense Collection — If you are old enough, you probably remember Hammer Films as being the premiere studio for horror movies from the late 1950s into the 1970s. City Council Books a Date with a Book

Local officials will help remind residents to Reconnect with Reading

Look for local leaders to start popping up on posters around town, but not to promote their own re-election. City Council members, Mayor Tom Perciak, school board members and others will be featured in the Strongsville Library's Reconnect With Reading campaign, which aims to remind people to pick up a book in their spare time. "We just want to get the word out that reading is important and show there are community leaders who are reading," said Heather Timko, adult services supervisor for the Strongsville branch. The American Library Association launched the idea a few years back by asking TV and movie stars to pose with their favorite books for billboards and posters.  The Cuyahoga County Public Library

Joe Hill Gives Fans a Devil of a Good Time

Horror novelist, comic book writer is a hit at Strongsville Library

Joe Hill's tweet Wednesday night: "Wow, Strongville was amazing. Big thanks to everyone who turned out for it. Couldn't have had more fun." Strongsville's return tweet: "Right back at ya." Some 200 people jammed the Strongsville Library Wednesday to hear Joe Hill talk about his work, ask him questions and get him to sign his horror books -- Heart-Shaped Box, Twentieth Century Ghosts and Horns, newly released in paperback and headed for the big screen. Hill walked in wearing light-up red horns on his head, to the delight of his fans. "You've gotta have your fun where you can get it," he shrugged.
