Dave Gusman will seek an at-large seat in Strongsville
Dave Gusman, who did not seek re-election to the Strongsville School Board last year after serving two terms, said he will run for Strongsville City Council next year. Gusman will vie for one of the three at-large seats. "I feel I can add value to City Council," Gusman said. "I think I have a good understanding of the concerns of residents." The at-large seats are currently held by Joe DeMio, Ken Dooner and Duke Southworth. Candidates don't run for specific at-large seats in Strongsville. The top three vote-getters among all the candidates will ultimately win the posts. If more than six candidates file, there will be a primary election in May to narrow the field to six. Gusman said he brings 10 years of experience on the city's Board of …

Dave Gusman said district bought land next to high school for that very reason
Former School Board member Dave Gusman has thrown his support behind a plan to build a new middle school next to Strongsville High School, saying that's the reason the district bought a 17-acre parcel there a few years ago. Gusman, who didn't seek re-election last fall, said he proposed putting a bond issue on the ballot to pay for a new middle school several times in recent years. "I couldn't get any traction with the idea when I was there," he said. "But I think this is the best way to approach the voters -- without a big tax increase." Gusman said the district purchased a wooded parcel behind Jardine Funeral Home, next to the school bus garage, about six years ago with the intention of eventually building a new middle school there. The …

On Thursday night, Gusman offered a few parting words to his peers and the public
Out with the old and in with the new. To close out the Board of Education’s last regular meeting of the year, board member Dave Gusman had the final word on Thursday night to talk about why he stepped down and to recount what he and the board were able to accomplish over the past several years. “It is with great pride that I finish out my eight years of service here,” he said. “I think as a change agent you can do so much, and you come to the point where it’s time to step aside and let somebody else take the reins and try to bring the district to the next step.” Gusman said he was most proud of the district’s 10 consecutive “Excellent” ratings, and said he was pleased with how the board has reorganized itself over the years. The …

Says he will serve out his term.
School Board member Dave Gusman said he will not resign his school board seat before his term expires at the end of the year, even though there are rumors circulating that he will leave the board early. “I am not running for re-election, but contrary to the rumors that are out there, I do intend to serve out the rest of my term until December,” Gusman said at a school board meeting Thursday. Gusman announced Aug. 10 -- the filing deadline for school board candidates -- that he would not seek a third term. Six candidates will vie for three open school board seats. Board members Ruth Brickley and Carl Naso will seek re-election. Also running are Richard Micko, a local school activist who ran unsuccessfully for the board in 2009; John …

It's a 'self-imposed term limit,' incumbent says
School Board member Dave Gusman will not seek a third term on the Strongsville Board of Education. Calling it a "self-imposed term limit," Gusman said his eight years on the board are enough. "After two terms, I've accomplished the majority of my original goals," he said. "It's time for someone else to step up and take a leadership role." His seat is one of three up for election this November. Board members Ruth Brickley and Carl Naso have both filed petitions to run for new four-year terms. Gusman said he will serve until the end of December, when his term expires. He said he is proud of the board's accomplishments during his term of service. "In the eight years I've been on the board, we've enacted a number of changes, including …

Remember that Southworth is Tom Patton's son-in-law. I believe that's the primary reason he gained the "appointment". I'm not sure how well Gusman could do as a council member, but at least he does have a track record.   more ›
