It's Official: Kids Get 2 Extra Days Off this Year

'Waiver days' approved by the state

  Strongsville students will get two extra days off this year, although their teachers won't. The state has approved two "waiver days," additional in-service days for teachers who have been hit with several state-mandated initiatives that have to be in place by next school year. The days off will be Friday, Feb. 15 and Friday, May 24. In both cases, students are already off the following Monday (for President's Day and Memorial Day), creating four-day weekends. Assistant Superintendent Cameron Ryba said the days will be used for professional development for all staff members, not just teachers. Kids May Get 2 Unexpected Days Off from School

District wants to give teachers extra in-service days in February and May

  How's this for a student's dream come true? The Strongsville Schools are applying to the state for two "waiver days" this school year -- days where teachers will report to work but kids stay home. Assistant Superintendent Cameron Ryba said teachers this year have so many state-mandated initiatives to comply with, they can't possibly finish them all in the two in-service days built into the school year. So he is applying to the Ohio Department of Education for two "waiver days" that would provide "time for teachers to sit down and work" on the reports, he said.
