Fire department says hot oil caused blaze on Meadows Edge
A kitchen fire on Tuesday caused an estimated $25,000 in damage to a home at 21564 Meadows Edge, according to Assistant Fire Chief Jack Draves. Draves said the fire started when a resident became distracted while pre-heating oil on the stove. She was alerted to the blaze by the sound of breaking glass in the microwave, and was able to extinguish most of the fire herself before she called 911, a news release said. The call came in at 8:57 p.m., with the first firefighters arriving three minutes later. Draves said 13 firefighters and five vehicles responded and extinguished the rest of the fire. A thermal imaging camera was used to keep structural damage to a minimum, he said. Firefighters also ventilated the structure to clear it of smoke…

Strongsville firefighters battle two blazes in one week
Fire destroyed a house on Priem Road early Friday morning, officials said. No one was home at the time and no injuries were reported. It was the second major house fire in Strongsville last week, following a blaze on Delaware Drive on Wednesday. Fire Chief Jeff Branic said a neighbor reported a fire in the woods off Priem Road about 12:30 a.m., followed by a call from another resident who said a house was burning. Firefighters found the home at 9889 Priem Rd., which sits back from the road about 500 feet, fully involved with fire. Crews laid about 500 feet of line down the driveway and deployed a deck gun, which delivers about 500 gallons of water a minute, to slow the fire's advance. No vehicles were in the driveway or garage. "…

What sparked blaze Wednesday is still a mystery
Investigators still do not know what sparked a fire that did extensive damage to a house on Delaware Drive Wednesday afternoon. Resident Kim Wasielewski and her daughter, Dana, 19, were home about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when Dana spotted the fire in the detached garage and called 911. The flames, which witnesses said grew taller than the garage, quickly spread to the back of the house. Firefighters tried to get in the front of the home, but were driven back by the heat and smoke. Neighbors reported hearing a popping noise, like firecrackers, then a girl screaming just before they saw the fire. The family members got out safely and firefighters rescued a cat, which was taken to a veterinary hospital. One cat died in the fire and a third was …

No family members hurt, but two cats die in blaze on Delaware Drive
A house on Delaware Drive was devastated by a fire Wednesday afternoon. Fire Chief Jeff Branic said it appears the blaze started in the garage at 14140 Delaware, but because of breezy conditions, blew quickly into the back of the house. Firefighters from six communities responded to the scene. Branic said firefighters entered the front of the house to attack the blaze, but were driven back by heat and smoke. Two Strongsville firefighters were taken to the hospital after suffering what appeared to be either smoke inhalation or heat exhaustion, the chief said. The fire was reported by the family's teenage daughter, who was home at the time with her mother. Neighbors reported hearing popping noises just before the flames shot out of the …

You have go to be kidding me. That stove fire could have ballooned to a full structure fire very quickly. Incidents like this need to be treated with a full response to keep them from spreading. And why did you feel it is necessary to drag the teacher thing into this. Give it a rest!   more ›
