Strongsville Man Helps Draft Law Against Home Improvement Scam

If you've had your air ducts cleaned, you might be a victim

A Strongsville resident who owns an air duct cleaning service says many of his competitors are running a scam that uses scare tactics to bilk homeowners out of hundreds of dollars. "It is a common occurrence for us to talk to customers who have paid over $1,000 to clean their ducts in a 900 square foot home, when the advertised rate was $149," George Grozan testified before state legislators Nov. 28. A company technician convinces the consumers there is a mold problem, which frightens them into having their system cleaned at six times the advertised price. Other times, the lowball price doesn't cover the whole system, leading to a "bait and switch" scam, Grozan said. And often, the company only does part of the job, loosening the dirt in…

Crematory is Hot Topic for School Board

Jardine promises crematorium won't be used for outside clients

A crematory that will abut school property came under scrutiny from the school board Thursday night as a resident and officials questioned potential hazards from mercury emissions. But Jason Jardine said the crematory he is adding to Jardine Funeral Home is safe. He also estimated it would be used fewer than 200 times a year -- and only for clients of Jardine's.   George Grozan, a Hunting Meadows resident and member of the School Facilities Task Force, questioned the safety of a crematory Jardine's plans to add to its Pearl Road business. Grozan offered research that indicates emissions from heavy metals -- in particular, mercury from dental fillings -- can be hazardous. He asked Jardine whether a third party had been brought in to …

Unfortunately you cannot just “default back to the original approvals of these sites across the country”, because every site has differing essential variables that factor into the analysis. An engineering evaluation of a crematory located in an industrial area remote from potential exposure to high concentrations of people differs greatly from our case. Therefore, it is essential that a third …   more ›

Schools Moving to Tear Down Allen Playground

But that is just a small piece of the puzzle when it comes to the empty elementary school.

Strongsville City Schools officials are slated to tear down the playground at the defunct Allen Elementary School, said Mark Donnelly, director of business services. While it may seem like Fedbruary's mild weather could have lended to a quicker demolition, Donnelly said the ground was still too muddy and wet. "Trying to get a big piece of heavy equipment in there...could present a problem," he said at Thursday's school board meeting. "So we thought we'd wait until right around this time when it's dry." According to a report by a playground inspector and the school's insurance company, the equipment was deemed unsafe, and it would've cost the school $30,000 to fix it. Bigger Picture To George Grozan, of Hunting Meadows, the playground is …

Allen Playground Should Stay, Resident Says

Hunting Meadows man urges school district to leave play equipment up

A Hunting Meadows resident who asked the school district in September to better maintain the grounds at the vacant Allen Elementary School is now seeking to keep the playground there intact. George Grozan recently thanked the Strongsville School Board for responding so quickly to residents' complaints about overgrown weeds at the former school. "In less than one week, the schools had staff at the school, trimming weeds," Grozan said. But residents in his neighborhood are now concerned that the district may remove playground equipment from the site, based on a recommendation from its insurance provider. "I think I can make a case that the playground is vital," Grozan said. "It's important." Allen closed a year ago because of declining …
