Council approves rezoning for gas station, convenience store
City Council has cleared the way for Giant Eagle to start planning a GetGo gas station and convenience store at the corner of Drake and Pearl roads. The GetGo would be situated on the site of a former service station there, but would also include vacant property to the north and east of the existing building. Council agreed to rezone two parcels totaling 1.87 acres from General Business to Motorist Services to accommodate the GetGo gas pumps and convenience store. Todd Waldo, a Giant Eagle representative, said the Strongsville GetGo would have eight gas pumps and would include a 5,600-square-foot store with a "kitchen" concept, featuring a 36-seat cafe with deli foods, in addition to a convenience store. The food offerings would include …

The last day to earn Foodperks is Feb. 13
Giant Eagle is ending foodperks! and adding extra incentive to use its fuelperks! program, according a press release from the Pennsylvannia-based company. The last day to earn foodperks! will be Feb. 13 and discounts must be redeemed by May 31. According to a letter obtained by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the CEO said customers thought the foodperks! program was "a little too complex." Giant Eagle is sending letters to its customers notifying them of the changes. In the letters, the company says not all customers liked the structure of the foodperks! promotion because it requires additional shopping planning. As a result, only a small percentage of customers received significant savings. Senior Director of Corporate Communications Rob …

New Market District will be larger; one outparcel will be scrapped
A 14,330-square-foot addition to the Market District store on Pearl Road was approved Thursday night by the Strongsville Planning Commission. The new plans show one of the two out-buildings has been eliminated, with that space now used for parking. The north side of the Market District store will be bumped out 80 feet for the larger supermarket, which was previously about 110,000 square feet. The store isn't saying yet what the new space will be used for. "These are small changes in response to what the community is asking for," said Howard Landau, spokesman for Giant Eagle. Landau said it is too early to day exactly how the space inside the store will be used. Phil Bishop of Echo Development said Thursday that grading continues on the …

Here are some of the weirdest police reports from departments across the region
Here are this week's most bizarre police calls, reports and charges. All information was provided by police reports from departments in Patch communities. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction. Blame it on technology: A Broadview Heights woman overlooked her .111 blood-alcohol content level on Aug. 26 when she explained to Westlake Police why she drove the wrong way on Interstate 90. Who deserved the blame? Her GPS, of course. That's what 26-year-old Jacqueline Kovach told police after she was stopped at 2:34 a.m. Police arrested her for drunk driving, an open container, no seat belt and willful and wanton disregard for safety. She drove west in the eastbound lanes near the Columbia Road overpass. …

Planning Commission approves Market District on Pearl Road
Plans for Giant Eagle to build a 110,000-square-foot Market District store on Pearl Road got a green light from the city's Planning Commission Thursday night, clearing the way for construction to start. Phil Bishop of Echo Realty said the company hopes to break ground in September or October. The new store will open next June, July or August, depending on how construction proceeds during the winter, he said. "The main focus is to get started this fall and be open next summer," Bishop said. Market District stores are upscale supermarkets that feature a pharmacy, restaurant, a wide array of prepared foods and specialty departments including cheese, bakery and meats. Voters agreed in March to rezone a portion of the Strongsville Golf property…

Market District store on Pearl Road still doesn't have design approval
Giant Eagle officials have asked the city's Architectural Review Board three times to sign off on plans for a Market District store on Pearl Road, and three times the answer has been no. The scrutiny may have delayed the start of construction, although Giant Eagle has not announced a timetable other than hoping to begin "this summer." Now, the soonest the company can get the Planning Commission to approve site plans is July 26 -- and that's only if the ARB is satisfied with the latest round of design revisions at its July 24 meeting. Building Commissioner Tony Biondillo said he was not surprised to have the company make return trips to the ARB. "Given the scope of the project, it's not unsual to go around that many times," he said. Giant …

Here are some of the weirdest police reports from departments across the region
It seems there's no alleged crime too bizarre to occur in Northeast Ohio. Here are some of this week's weird calls and charges. All information was provided by police reports from departments in Patch communities. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction. Driving through a neighborhood: An 18-year-old Avon Lake man faces drunk driving charges from an incident that caused damage to a home, a garage and a car. Westlake Police said William Muller drove his 1991 Ford pickup truck into a garage and car Tuesday morning on Bradley Road. About 15 minutes later, a resident of the 31100 block of Center Ridge Road said somebody drove a pickup truck through his backyard and into a creek before exiting on foot. A …

Plans to be tweaked; company will return next month for a vote
Giant Eagle officials are asking the city's Architectural Review Board to sign off on drawings of a Market District store on Pearl Road, the first in a line of approvals needed before the grocery store can break ground. In a meeting Tuesday morning, the board complimented the look of the store, which architect Loren Wright said features different heights, materials and colors to break up a potential "big box" look. I think they did a great job on the design," Building Commissioner Tony Biondillo said. But the board raised a number of other issues: • Screening. Phil Bishop of Echo Realty, the development company, said the store is proposing an 8- to 12-foot mound to the rear, topped by a 6-foot wall or fence, which he said would block the …

Meeting set for Tuesday to look at drawings
Plans for the new Market District store on Pearl Road will go before the city's Architectural Review Board on Tuesday. The meeting is set for 9 a.m. in City Council Chambers. Residents are invited to attend, but there is no public participation at ARB meetings, said Carol Oprea, planning department secretary. Plans for the 110,000-square-foot grocery store will be available for viewing at the meeting. They are expected to reflect changes sought by the Strongsville Planning Commission after a preliminary review May 10. Residents near the project site -- which is on the Storngsville Golf and Honey Hut property -- have said they want input into the plans. Some residents fear they will be able to hear trucks and trash compactors behind the …

Rezoning is mostly complete, but no plans have been submitted yet
A month after voters cleared the way for Giant Eagle to build a 110,000-square-foot Market District store on the Strongsville Golf property on Pearl Road, here is an update on the project: 1. Rezoning -- City Council on Monday officially rezoned most of the property to a business classification. Officials here had been waiting for clearance from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, which had not certified the results of the March 6 election, when Strongsville voters agreed to rezone part of the land from residential to business. However, a small section of land -- one just north of St. John Neumann Church -- was overlooked in the legislation and is being rezoned by council in a separate ordinance. It was not zoned residential and does …
