Well perhaps your daughter isn't one of the kids that actually thrives on learning and is a respectful student to the subs, and she is telling you crazy lies???? or perhaps it was during the first few days of the strike??? I happen to know for a fact that learning is going on...obviously not on the scale of what they are used to...but there are qualified subs who hold teaching degrees and know …   more ›

Market District Construction on Track

New grocery store could open around the end of the year, Giant Eagle says

Construction of the new Market District store on Pearl Road is on schedule, according to the company. "They expect to open toward the end of the year," said Matt Metzger of Adcom Group, which serves as a spokesman for Giant Eagle. Voters in March 2012 cleared the way for Giant Eagle to build a 110,000-square-foot Market District store on the former Strongsville Golf property by rezoning the property. So far, crews have razed the buildings on the site -- including Strongsville Golf and Honey Hut -- and have cleared trees and graded the land. Phil Bishop of Echo Development said in December that his company, which is getting the land ready for construction, plans to deliver the parcel, with a concrete pad that will house the building, to …

I thought they should have done that when the original construction was done. They did that on southbound Howe at Drake and it paid off nicely. What is nice, is it allows for right turns on red since the traffic one in the direction pulls into is not too heavy and keeps traffic flowing and the intersection in those directions from backing up too much. Poor planning.   more ›

Get Go is Coming, and Here's Where It's Going

Giant Eagle seeks approval to build a gas station, convenience store, small cafe in Strongsville

Giant Eagle, which has promised to bring a GetGo to Strongsville, is seeking to build the gas station at the corner of Drake and Pearl roads. The GetGo would be situated on the site of a former service station there, but would also include vacant property to the north and east of the existing building. The entire parcel would be 2.61 acres, said Todd Waldo, a Giant Eagle representative. "The city has been absent a quality fuel station for many years, and we hope to fill that gap," Waldo said. City Council introduced legislation Tuesday to rezone the two parcels -- a total of 1.87 acres -- from General Business to Motorist Services to accommodate the Get Go gas pumps and convenience store. Waldo said the Strongsville GetGo would have …

Giant Eagle May Offer Cyber Shopping at New Store

Market District to add 'Curbside Express' option

Strongsville's new Market District store could be among the first in the nation to have Curbside Express, an option to shop for your groceries online then pick them up, bagged and waiting, at the store. Giant Eagle officials are seeking to change the design of the Pearl Road store to add about 14,000 square feet, some of which will provide room for bagging and a drive-through grocery pick-up, said Carol Oprea, planning secretary for Strongsville. One of the two out-parcels in the parking lot will be eliminated and the space used for parking. "You'd be able to place your order online, and they'll shop for you, bag it and take it out to your car," Oprea said. It's a service still in its infancy for Giant Eagle, she said. "They're just …

Giant Eagle Ready to Break Ground on Market District

New supermarket expected to be open next summer

Giant Eagle is tentatively scheduled to start site work on its 110,000-square-foot Market District store on Pearl Road in mid-October, which puts the supermarket on track to open next summer. Economic Development Director Brent Painter said the company is hoping to start construction on the building in early 2013.  Strongsville Golf said on its Facebook page it would close its driving range in October, but did not specify the date. And Honey Hut Ice Cream, which is also on the site of the Market District store, has already built a new store in Brunswick to replace this one. Painter said the company expects to start demolishing the structures and grading the site this month, and wants to have the pad ready for the the Market District …

I hope that the Get Go station will sell diesel fuel too. My fuel perks go unused because my car uses diesel. This is a trend that is growing in new cars and trucks.   more ›

What's Going On at Drake and Pearl?

In case you were wondering, the short answer is 'nothing yet'

Back in March, Mayor Tom Perciak announced there were plans in the works to revitalize a former service station at the corner of Drake and Pearl roads. Perciak, delivering his State of the City address, said he would soon be able to share some "great news" about that corner. Four months later: No news yet. Strongsville's Planning Secretary, Carol Oprea, said no plans have been submitted yet for the former gas station site. Economic Development Director Brent Painter said this week that while the city does expect the property to be redeveloped, he has not heard of any imminent plans for that corner. "The last we were told, they planned to redevelop the site," Painter said. "We believe the property is going to be developed and cleaned up." …

I agree with Ralph. A right turn only lane would benefit drivers going westbound. Can't believe when they redesigned the corner that this was not included. The left turn lane was taken so far back, it never fills up! Once again no visionary planning on the city's part!   more ›

Giant Eagle Clears 1 Hurdle; 1 Left to Go

New Market District store gets approval from Architectural Review Board

Strongsville's Architectural Review Board has approved the design of a 110,000-square-foot Market District store on Pearl Road. That leaves Giant Eagle with one more step before it can break ground -- the blessing of the Planning Commission. The commission is expected to review site plans for the new store Thursday night. Tuesday morning marked the fourth time officials from Giant Eagle went before the ARB. Phil Bishop of Echo Realty, the company developing the new Market District store for Giant Eagle, said the newest plans take into consideration all the city's concerns. • A parapet on top of the building has been extended and made higher to screen rooftop air conditioning units. • The wall around the loading dock has been raised to 12 …

I'm suprised Giant Eagle still wants to come here considering what could potentially be built across the street-a body burner! How great would that be-the waft of smoke/toxins in the air as one shops or dines @ the new Market District restaurant-No Thanks! I don't really have a problem w/a Giant Eagle in my back yard, but a crematory-there are more sensible locations for them .   more ›

Second Public Meeting Set on Giant Eagle Project

Developers will answer questions about proposed Market District on Pearl Road

The developers of the proposed Market District store on Pearl Road have set a second public meeting for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 at the St. John Neumann Activity Center, 16271 Pearl Rd. More than 200 residents attended the first meeting Jan. 18, with some supporting the project and others worried about noise and traffic. Giant Eagle is seeking to close its store at Westfield SouthPark and build an upscale Market District store and Get Go gas station on the Strongsville Golf and Honey Hut property on Pearl Road. The project hinges on a rezoning that would have to be approved both citywide and in Ward 2, where the project lies. The issue is on the March 6 ballot. The meeting will be hosted by Nick Catanzarite, attorney representing the …

Campaign for Market District Revs Up

Group launches website to bolster support for Giant Eagle project on Pearl Road

Supporters of a proposed Giant Eagle Market District store on Pearl Road have taken their campaign online. A group called Friends of Issue 4 has created a website called Vote Yes on Issue 4 that urges voters to pass a rezoning issue March 6 that would clear the way for the project. The group is headed by Mike Catan and Tim Dean of Darice company, which operates Pat Catan's. Catan's son, attorney Nick Catanzarite, is representing the owners of the Strongsville Golf property, who want to sell their land to Giant Eagle. Giant Eagle wants to close its 70,000-square-foot store at Westfield SouthPark and build a 110,000-square-foot Market District -- an upscale supermarket with gourmet items, a large prepared foods section and an in-store …

Apparently you don't realize this is not a run of the mill grocery store. Its our city's loss if they go elsewhere with this style store. Do your homework. Or is it that you just don't want it 4 houses away from you? Should have thought about that before you bought your home near commercial property. And, come on, do you really think the whole county will be flocking daily and clogging the newly …   more ›
