First 'Great Bear' Restaurant Opens

New eatery serves up mountain pies at SouthPark Mall

The first ever Great Bear Mountain Pie restaurant opened this week in the food court at SouthPark Mall, offering a grilled pocket sandwich that's a new dining concept here, but may be familiar to campers. Great Bear started turning out its special "mountain pies" on Monday. "Business has been great so far," said co-owner Gary Medved, who created the concept and designed the grill he uses to make the sandwiches. The idea is based on sandwiches campers make over an open fire, putting ingredients between two slices of bread and cooking it in a special press that crimps and seals the edges, toasting the bread while warming the filling. You can try of of the specialty pies, or design your own, choosing from a variety of meats, cheeses and …

'Mountain Pie' Restaurant Close to Opening

Great Bear will be the first eatery of its kind

Ready to taste your first mountain pie? A new restaurant that will feature the pocket sandwiches is expected to open in about four weeks in the food court at SouthPark Mall, next to Mitchell's Ice Cream. "We're excited," said Gary Medved, who created the concept with his brother, Dave.  Great Bear Mountain Pie will offer a high-end sandwich known to some campers at "mountain pies," typically made over an open fire at a campsite. Medved actually invented the grill the restaurant will use to cook the sandwiches, and his family worked with a chef to create the recipes. Western Reserve Bakery helped design an artisan bread. "People have made these over a campfire for decades. I had an idea to commercialize them, because once you leave the …

First Ever 'Mountain Pie' Restaurant Coming to Strongsville

Great Bear will have 'pies,' but not the kind you're thinking

The first Great Bear Mountain Pie is expected to open here in August. The restaurant will occupy a space in the food court at Westfield SouthPark, next to Mitchell's Ice Cream. But the specialty won't be a regular pie. These are "mountain pies" -- the kind of sandwiches campers cook over an open fire.  "People have made these over a campfire for decades. I had an idea to commercialize them, because once you leave the campgrounds, you can't get them," said Gary Medved, who created the concept with his brother, Dave. Medved has invented a type of grill that replicates -- on a large scale -- the tool campers use to make pocket sandwiches out of bread and fillings.
