Sheiban Jewelers doesn't wait for city to pass legislation to do its part to help
A city councilman's proposal to beautify Pearl Road by adding fencing, trees and landscaping is officially at a standstill, but it is unofficially taking shape. Sheiban Jewelers has quietly installed black wrought-iron fencing in front of its buildings to show support for the plan. "We want Strongsville to be beautiful," owner Tony Sheiban said. "I thought it was a great idea. I've received so many compliments -- people come in and say, 'what a beautiful fence.'" Ward 3 Councilman Jim Carbone, who with Ward 2 Councilman Matt Schonhut last year proposed all new businesses on Pearl Road be required to conform to certain uniform streetscape standards, said he has spoken with a number of Pearl Road business owners about the idea. Councilman's home glows with hundreds of singing, talking, lighted decorations
Back in high school, when the other kids were buying CDs and fast food, Jim Carbone was spending his money on something a little less predictable. Christmas decorations. Carbone, Strongsville's Ward 3 councilman, now has hundreds of glittering, twinkling and singing snowmen and Santas and trees throughout his house, including a "Christmas room" in the basement with a talking Christmas tree and snow scene filled with animated characters. "This is my pride and joy," Carbone said, pointing to the display But there's also the singing Santa in the living room, a store display he bought in 1989 from the former Hill's department store; a talking Yule log by the fire place; and a nearly life-size snowman in the foyer. He loves it all. "I pull in…

City administrators say Carbone's idea of beautifying Route 42 won't work
The city's administration has all but quashed a plan to beautify Pearl Road by unifying the colors and landscaping. Department heads said there are flaws in the plan, which was created by Ward 3 Councilman Jim Carbone with help from Ward 2 Councilman Matt Schonhut. For one, it could be off-putting to businesses, Economic Development Director Brent Painter said. "It's important we have a welcoming, warm, business-friendly approach," Painter said. Carbone, whose goal is to eliminate the "hodge podge" look of Pearl Road, said he hasn't given up. "This is something that needs to be done," he said. "There have been some great improvements in the last 10 years. This just takes it one more step to create consistency." The plan seeks to have new …

Councilman, school board member announce idea to construct new building next to high school, ultimately save money for district
Two City Councilmen and school board member have unveiled a proposal to build a new middle school next to Strongsville High School -- a plan they say would bring much-needed improvements to buildings throughout the district and ultimately save money. Ward 3 Councilman Jim Carbone, Ward 2 Councilman Matt Schonhut and board member Carl Naso want to put a bond issue on the November ballot to build a new middle school that would replace Center and Albion. "I graduated in 1991 and I remember how bad Center was then," Carbone said. "And 21 years later, it's still bad." The $72 million bond issue would include $55 million for a middle school, plus $12 million for improvements to the high school and $5 million for upgrades to elementary schools. …

Matt Schonhut, Jim Carbone start their duties this week
Strongsville's two newest councilmen cast their first official votes at Tuesday night's council meeting, 24 hours after taking the oath of office. Matt Schonhut and Jim Carbone start 2012 as the new representatives in Wards 2 and 3, respectively. "Welcome to government, and welcome to governing," Mayor Tom Perciak told them as Tuesday's organizational meeting started. "We look forward to a very successful four years." Carbone got an assignment as his first council meeting -- Council President Mike Daymut appointed him to serve as council's liaison to the Strongsville schools. "I think it's fitting," Carbone said. "I'm a school resource officer (in North Olmsted) and I went to Strongsville schools kindergarten through 12." Otherwise, …

I think Jim Carbone has a great idea. Pearl Road in Strongsville should no longer look like W.25th Street in Cleveland.   more ›
