Giant Eagle seeks approval to build a gas station, convenience store, small cafe in Strongsville
Giant Eagle, which has promised to bring a GetGo to Strongsville, is seeking to build the gas station at the corner of Drake and Pearl roads. The GetGo would be situated on the site of a former service station there, but would also include vacant property to the north and east of the existing building. The entire parcel would be 2.61 acres, said Todd Waldo, a Giant Eagle representative. "The city has been absent a quality fuel station for many years, and we hope to fill that gap," Waldo said. City Council introduced legislation Tuesday to rezone the two parcels -- a total of 1.87 acres -- from General Business to Motorist Services to accommodate the Get Go gas pumps and convenience store. Waldo said the Strongsville GetGo would have …

New Market District store gets approval from Architectural Review Board
Strongsville's Architectural Review Board has approved the design of a 110,000-square-foot Market District store on Pearl Road. That leaves Giant Eagle with one more step before it can break ground -- the blessing of the Planning Commission. The commission is expected to review site plans for the new store Thursday night. Tuesday morning marked the fourth time officials from Giant Eagle went before the ARB. Phil Bishop of Echo Realty, the company developing the new Market District store for Giant Eagle, said the newest plans take into consideration all the city's concerns. • A parapet on top of the building has been extended and made higher to screen rooftop air conditioning units. • The wall around the loading dock has been raised to 12 …

Market District store on Pearl Road still doesn't have design approval
Giant Eagle officials have asked the city's Architectural Review Board three times to sign off on plans for a Market District store on Pearl Road, and three times the answer has been no. The scrutiny may have delayed the start of construction, although Giant Eagle has not announced a timetable other than hoping to begin "this summer." Now, the soonest the company can get the Planning Commission to approve site plans is July 26 -- and that's only if the ARB is satisfied with the latest round of design revisions at its July 24 meeting. Building Commissioner Tony Biondillo said he was not surprised to have the company make return trips to the ARB. "Given the scope of the project, it's not unsual to go around that many times," he said. Giant …

Plans to be tweaked; company will return next month for a vote
Giant Eagle officials are asking the city's Architectural Review Board to sign off on drawings of a Market District store on Pearl Road, the first in a line of approvals needed before the grocery store can break ground. In a meeting Tuesday morning, the board complimented the look of the store, which architect Loren Wright said features different heights, materials and colors to break up a potential "big box" look. I think they did a great job on the design," Building Commissioner Tony Biondillo said. But the board raised a number of other issues: • Screening. Phil Bishop of Echo Realty, the development company, said the store is proposing an 8- to 12-foot mound to the rear, topped by a 6-foot wall or fence, which he said would block the …

Meeting set for Tuesday to look at drawings
Plans for the new Market District store on Pearl Road will go before the city's Architectural Review Board on Tuesday. The meeting is set for 9 a.m. in City Council Chambers. Residents are invited to attend, but there is no public participation at ARB meetings, said Carol Oprea, planning department secretary. Plans for the 110,000-square-foot grocery store will be available for viewing at the meeting. They are expected to reflect changes sought by the Strongsville Planning Commission after a preliminary review May 10. Residents near the project site -- which is on the Storngsville Golf and Honey Hut property -- have said they want input into the plans. Some residents fear they will be able to hear trucks and trash compactors behind the …

Strongsville Patch readers have plenty to say about new Giant Eagle supermarket on Pearl Road
Readers who voted in our poll about Issue 4 overwhelmingly favored rezoning land on Pearl Road for a Giant Eagle Market District store. Results of the poll, which we published yesterday, show 72 percent of readers said they plan to vote in favor of the rezoning. About 24 percent said they will oppose the rezoning at the polls Tuesday, and 3 percent were undecided. In raw numbers, 166 people are voting yes, 55 are voting no and 7 weren't sure yet. It's not a scientific poll. And it does not break down the percentage of Ward 2 voters, who will have a big voice in deciding the issue. The rezoning must be approved both citywide and in Ward 2, where the project lies. Residents who live near the project are opposing it because of noise and …

Resident urges voters to turn down Issue 4 rezoning

Wednesday, February 22, 2012
To the Editor: Residents of Strongsville, especially residents of Ward 2, I am asking you to do two things: THINK; and vote NO on Issue 4 on March 6. THINK about big-box stores. The Giant Eagle Market District store is a BIG big-box store at 110,000 square feet. We currently have over 40 empty storefronts lining Pearl Road in Strongsville. Do you THINK that a BIG box store will help fill those empty spaces or cause even more desertion by driving out more of the small businesses currently struggling to survive? Big-box stores breed big box stores. Consider the north end of Pearl Road, which started with just one big box store, a Builders Square, which morphed into Home Depot and bred the competing Lowes with a Walmart squeezed between. …
