Company seeking to build second location in Strongsville
The proposed Sheetz at the corner of Whitney and Pearl roads is moving forward. Company representatives have submitted site plans for a 6,558-square-foot gas station with convenience store and car wash for vacant land at the intersection. Sheetz also asked the Planning Commission to approve 419 square feet for an inside eating area seating up to 27, and 715 square feet outside for a patio seating a maximum of 22 people. The commission did not yet approve the plans, instead referring developers to the Board of Zoning Appeals for conditional use permits for both the outside patio and for a small propane storage area. It's the first action on the project since City Council rezoned the property in January. It is expected to be joined on the …

New eatery will go on site of former Quality Catering
The fast food restaurant proposed for the newly vacant corner of Pearl and Whitney roads is a McDonald's. The fast food chain has submitted plans for a 4,387-square-foot building at the southwest corner. Local developers North Pearl LLC bought both the southwest corner parcel and the adjacent Quality Catering lot at sheriff's sale in December for $445,000 and said they planned a fast food eatery there. City Council last month rezoned part of the land from General Business to Restaurant-Recreational. It's not the first proposal for development on that corner. In 2010, Sheetz sought to build a gas station there, but council turned down the rezoning request after nearby residents objected. Sheetz has since joined a development on the other…

PetPeople to open in Greens of Strongsville
A Columbus-based pet store is renovating a space in the Greens of Strongsville and hopes to open in June. PetPeople will open its 17th store in Strongsville, joining five other northeast Ohio locations, including Rocky River and Avon. "Our focus is on nutrition -- the natural nutrition you won't find at a lot of other stores," said Terri Montigny, marketing manager. The store will feature some brands the public is familiar with and other brands most people haven't heard of before. It specializes in healthy diets and in finding a food for pets with allergies or intolerance issues, with specially trained employees available to help. "We're all kind of nutrition geeks," Montigny said. Montigny said the store will include a self-serve dog …

A wrap-up of news from the last week in Strongsville: Teachers strike ends seventh week -- A negotiating session April 14 brought the first movement from the Board of Education on some key contract issues. The Strongsville Education Association makes a counter proposal. A survey shows the majority of residents oppose the strike and support the School Board. School Board meets -- The Strongsville Board of Education meets for the first time since the strike began March 4 in an emotional, tension-filled session and included heckling and booing as parents and students spoke. Corner of Whitney and Pearl is ready to be developed
The southwest corner of Whitney and Pearl roads has been rezoned for a restaurant. Attorney Nick Catanzarite, representing North Pearl LLC, which purchased the land in December, said the company has not reached a deal with any restaurant yet, but is looking to bring in a fast-food chain. City Council this week voted to rezone the land from General Business to Restaurant-Recreational. The new zoning gives North Pearl "the best opportunity to immediately develop this parcel," Catanzarite told council. North Pearl bought both the southwest corner parcel and the adjacent Quality Catering lot at sheriff's sale in December for $445,000. The Quality Catering site is already zoned Restaurant-Recreational. Catanzarite said he could not specify …

Council approves rezoning for gas station, convenience store
City Council has cleared the way for Giant Eagle to start planning a GetGo gas station and convenience store at the corner of Drake and Pearl roads. The GetGo would be situated on the site of a former service station there, but would also include vacant property to the north and east of the existing building. Council agreed to rezone two parcels totaling 1.87 acres from General Business to Motorist Services to accommodate the GetGo gas pumps and convenience store. Todd Waldo, a Giant Eagle representative, said the Strongsville GetGo would have eight gas pumps and would include a 5,600-square-foot store with a "kitchen" concept, featuring a 36-seat cafe with deli foods, in addition to a convenience store. The food offerings would include …
