Graffiti Vandals Sought; Mailbox Switcheroo: Police Blotter

The following information was provided by the Strongsville Police Department

  Police are on the lookout for kids armed with spray paint in the Meadowood area. Reports said that graffiti has been showing up in the neighborhood for the last week or so. On May 13, a resident reported about 7 p.m. that someone had painted words on the storm culvert by the tennis courts -- apparently during the day. On May 18, police found someone had climbed onto the room of Olmsted Heating and Cooling and written "truth" on the side of the building. The same word was painted on the side of a work van. Reports said the word "truth" has also shown up in Meadowood, including on Pebblebrook, and fences at the development's rec center and on Albion Road. Woman Looks for Teens Having Babies; Kids Shout 'White Power:' Police Blotter

The following information was provided by the Strongsville Police Department

  Police received a complaint about a woman who approached school bus drivers May 17 and asked if they knew any pregnant girls who wanted to give up their babies. The woman drove off, but police were able to track her down. The woman said she was concerned about teenage abortion and wanted to make sure girls at Strongsville High School had the right information. She was told to speak with the principal or superintendent if she wanted to pass along any more information. Roadside Demonstration Employees at Sheetz called police shortly before midnight May 19 after a group of about five teens set up lawn chairs at the corner of Prospect and Royalton Roads and yelled "white power" at passing traffic. Slick Scam at Walmart: Police Blotter

The following information was provided by the Strongsville Police Department

  A shopper at Walmart thought he was being careful when he bought a $100 gift card from another customer for $50 about 10:30 p.m. May 10.  The shopper took the card to a cashier, who confirmed there was, in fact, $100 on the card. But when he tried to use it to make a purchase later, he discoverd the seller had switched cards, giving him one with no value instead of the one with $100. Drama at the Dance Police were called to Michaud's about 9:30 p.m. May 11 after a scuffle between two girls. The victim told police she accidentally stepped on another girl's dress, and the girl pushed her, causing her to stumble. The victim said she was pregnant and suffering stomach pain. Screaming Man; Another Burglary Attempt: Police Blotter

The following information was provided by the Strongsville Police Department

  A Glendale Avenue man reported hearing a man screaming about 9:45 p.m. May 6. Police were able to locate a man screaming from an upstairs bedroom of a house, but no one would come to the door. Neighbors said a man does live in the house. Burglary Attempt A Greenbrier Drive resident came home from work about 6:30 p.m. May 7 to find someone had tampered with the screens on his front window. No entry was made, but neighbors have reported similar incidents, he said. Odd Situation Police found a car in the parking lot in front of Pier 1 with both passenger doors standing open about 5:45 p.m. May 7. Homeless Man Back in Woods with Tent: Police Blotter

The following information was provided by the Strongsville Police Department

  A homeless man who was told last week to pack up his tent and leave the wooded area near the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center returned a few days later, a report said. On May 7, police found the man had again pitched a tent behind the rec center. He was taken into custody for trespassing. On May 3, the man's campsite was discovered when his cooking fire set the surrounding area ablaze.   He was warned then to find another place to stay. Strange Find Underground Police were called to Royalton Road May 7 after someone found a suspicious bag in an underground vault, a report said. Burglary; Car Break-Ins; Homeless Man Living at Walmart: Police Blotter

The following information was provided by the Strongsville Police Department

  A Ridge Creek Road resident told polic she arrived home about 6:30 p.m. May 3 to find someone had entered her house through a dining room window. All her jewelry was missing, a report said. Unlocked Cars At least four cars were entered on two successive nights, according to reports. On Chevy Chase, someone went through two cars in a driveway the night of May 3, but only change was taken. The next night, a purse was taken from a car parked in a Forestview Drive driveway.  The same night, a diaper bag and some CDs were stolen from a car on North Bexley Drive. Hanging Out A passerby reported a man reclining in a car outside Walmart and suspected he may be doing drugs. Police spoke with the man, who said he is homeless and living in his car…

Man Found Living in Woods Behind Rec Center: Police Blotter

The following information was provided by the Strongsville Police Department

  A fire in a wooded area behind the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center May 3 led officials to discover someone has been living back there. Firefighters were called to smoke on the east side of the building about 9:40 a.m. and reported to police that there was someone living there. Officers located a man walking to the area, who admitted to having a fort and cooking. The said he believed he had gotten permission to camp there. He agreed to gather up his belongings and move on.  He didn't go too quickly, though. About 4:40 p.m. the same day, a witness reported a homeless man washing his clothes in the creek near the rec center. He was again asked to go. Guy Gets Away from Cab, But Can't Escape Tracking Dog: Police Blotter

The following information was provided by the Strongsville police department

  A cab driver asked police for help after dropping off a fare on Gold Rush Drive who walked away without paying about 3 a.m. April 30. Police checked the house, and found the man never went inside -- just walked past. A police dog was called in, who successfully tracked the man to a house on Golden Star Drive.  The guy's father paid the cabbie, who didn't seek charges. Pretend Shooter A concerned witness asked police to cheeck out a man who was pointing his hand like a gun and pretending to shoot at cars as he walked on Royalton Road about 6:50 p.m. May 2. Crime Takes a Dip in Strongsville

Police Department's annual report shows a significant decrease in many offenses

  Burglaries, break-ins and thefts from vehicles all decreased in 2012, according to the Strongsville Police Department's annual report. The report also shows a drop in auto theft and vandalism. Why? Difficult to say, according to Police Chief James Kobak, but an active patrol seems to make a difference. Kobak said he believes having police officers visible in the neighborhoods -- patrolling and enforcing traffic laws -- has an effect on crime in a community. "If somebody is thinking about committing a crime and they see a police officer in the neighborhood, I think that acts as a big deterrent," Kobak said. 'Big Red Water Balloon' Spotted; People Mowing Too Early and Too Late: Police Blotter

  A resident thought he saw trouble brewing when he spotted a bunch of teens with a "big red water balloon or something like that" on Wakeford Circle about 10 p.m. April 27, according to a report. But when police went there, a neighbor said the kids actually had oversized boxing gloves. They had gone inside a house by then, the report said. Not the Best Way to Get a Date A woman called police about 6:30 p.m. April 26 to say she had been followed by a man in a truck all the way from Middleburg Heights.
