Intensive 3-day action takes criminals off the roads
The Ohio State Highway Patrol conducted “All Out Days” Nov. 8-10, sending all officers from all ranks out to patrol the roads to remove the criminal element. The initiative also aimed to reduce fatal and injury crashes. During that time, troopers made 119 drug arrests and 33 felony arrests, apprehended 67 wanted individuals and initiated 82 criminal cases. In addition, they arrested 281 impaired drivers. During one traffic stop in Ashtabula County on Nov. 9, troopers seized 36 pounds of hydroponic marijuana, worth an estimated $230,000. The driver, David Elliot, 63, of Lake Oswego, OR, was incarcerated in the Ashtabula County Jail and charged with trafficking in marijuana and possession of marijuana, both third-degree felonies. Drunken driving arrests are up significantly this year
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is warning drivers: If you choose to drive impaired, you will be arrested. Troopers have stepped up their focus on impaired driving enforcement in 2011, leading to 1,383 more drunken or impaired driving arrests this year than in 2010. As a result, accidents have gone down. “We are seeing positive results from the hard work of our troopers on the road everyday removing impaired and dangerous drivers from the roadways,” Colonel John Born, Patrol superintendent, said in a news release. “As the Patrol’s OVI arrests increase, we are seeing a direct correlation in the decrease of overall fatalities.” Impaired drivers were responsible for 40 percent of the fatal crashes in 2010. Crashes and speeding tickets declined this year
Nine people in Ohio lost their lives in fatal crashes over the Memorial Day weekend, according to the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Fortunately, in Strongsville, there were no fatal accidents. Statewide, drug arrests increased 22 percent and drunk driving arrests increased by 8 percent overall since last Memorial Day weekend. State statistics: The Ohio State Highway Patrol handed out 5,541 safety belt violations – an increase of more than 15 percent from 2010. The patrol made 18,034 non-enforcement contacts, of which 5,718 were to assist motorists and 46 were to assist other law enforcement agencies.
