New legislation would take mayor's court out of tiny village
State Sen. Tom Patton, R-Strongsville, has been trying for several years to get Linndale police off I-71. The village is known for patroling a short stretch of the interstate in an aggressive enforcement effort many call a speed trap. A new measure might do the trick, Patton says. His initiative would increase the minimum population a community must have to operate a mayor's court. “This bill doesn’t eliminate mayor’s courts -- it weeds out the ones who abuse their power for financial gain," Patton said. Patton said Linndale gets more than 80 percent of its annual operating budget from citations. The village has only 179 residents and spans five city blocks, but its Mayor's Court processed nearly 5,000 cases in 2010. It's not Patton's …

They introduce bill to double the state's tax credit to $20 million a year
State Rep. Mike Dovilla and State Sen. Tom Patton have introduced legislation to raise the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit to $20 million per year in an effort to bring more filmmakers here. The credit "has a proven record of success" by "bringing productions to our state -- providing more jobs, more economic development and more working families earning a living wage," Dovilla said in a news release. It is currently capped at $10 million a year. According to a recent report by Cleveland State University, previous projects receiving the credit created more than 9,000 jobs and spent $19.5 million on wages and $53.6 million on support services. "The motion picture tax incentive creates jobs and is a proven money maker for Ohio, earning 20 …

Patton's son, a former Cleveland Heights Police officer, died while chasing a suspect in 2010
The Ohio General Assembly approved legislation Wednesday to create an alert system that is used when a suspect has injured or killed a police officer. State Sen. Tom Patton (R-Strongsville), whose son was a Cleveland Heights Police officer and died while chasing a suspect in 2010, sponsored the "Blue Alert system." A portion of Mayfield Road was renamed "Officer Thomas F. Patton II Memorial Highway" in September in the officer's honor. State Sen. Gayle Manning (R-North Ridgeville) also sponsored the legislation. “Much like Amber Alerts and Silver Alerts, Blue Alerts utilize broadcast alert systems to relay information about the suspect to the public in a timely manner,” according to a press release from Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine’s …

State senator said he would sponsor legislation
State Sen. Tom Patton may be taking on a superhero soon. Patton, a Strongsville Republican, has agreed to sponsor legislation -- if a group of enthusiasts completes a successful petition drive -- to create an Ohio license plate marked with the Superman logo. The plate would also say "Ohio -- Birthplace of Superman." "I think Cleveland should be proud it's the birthplace of Superman," Patton said. The Siegel and Shuster Society, a nonprofit group that honors Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, is collecting signatures on a petition seeking to create the special license plates. The group must collect at least 500 signatures on the petition. Patton said he was asked by former University Heights Mayor Beryl Rothschild to sponsor …
