Tom Patton Elected Majority Floor Leader

State senator starts second term in office

State Sen. Tom Patton, R–Strongsville, was officially sworn in for his second term as senator for the 24th District during opening ceremonies for the 130th General Assembly Jan. 7. In addition, his colleagues elected him a second time to serve in the chamber’s No. 3 post, Majority Floor Leader. Patton was first elected to the Ohio Senate in 2008 after serving three terms in the Ohio House of Representatives. “Over the past two years, we have been diligent in establishing Ohio as a jobs and business-friendly state,” Patton said in a news release. “By eliminating our deficit, drastically reducing regulations and reducing Ohioans’ income taxes, we have seen the state’s unemployment rating plummet more than two percent."  Patton also serves …

Congratulations Tom. Since you're the chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Highways and Transportation, can you help get a Boston Road exit/entrance ramp on I71? This would relieve the congestion from Brunswick motorists using the Royalton Road ramp. There's been talk of a ramp on Boston Road for some time now.   more ›

Patton Introduces Healthcare Measure in Ohio Senate

Resolution would promote healthy lifestyle choices

State Sen. Tom Patton, R-24 of Strongsville, has introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 31, which would name November 2012 as Personal Healthcare Month in Ohio. “We are all very aware that several chronic diseases are increasingly consuming a significant amount of our nation’s health care expenses,” Patton said before the Senate Standing Committee on Health, Human Services, and Aging. “It is my hope that through initiatives promoted through Personal Health Care Month, many of these expenses can be reduced or eliminated when individuals take personal action by making healthier lifestyle choices for themselves and their families.” During his testimony, Patton reminded his Senate colleagues that preventing illness is far less costly than …

Msg 4 U: Texting Ban Starts Friday

For kids under 18, even talking on cell phones while driving will be illegal

Ohio's new law banning texting while driving takes effect Aug.31, prohibiting anyone from sending or reading messages from behind the wheel. The measure takes things a step further for drivers under 18: They can't talk on a cell phone at all, even with Bluetooth or other hands-free methods. "I am confident that this one small step will have a great impact as we work toward safer roadways," said State Sen. Tom Patton, R-24, who supported the legislation. No one will get ticketed just yet. There's a six-month grace period built into the law, and police will issue warnings until next March 1. But "texting" doesn't just mean thumbing in messages. It applies to reading, too -- even checking your email.  "It is important to note that 'texting' …

Mayor to Fight State's Plan to Take Over Local Tax Collection

Perciak inviting other mayors to meet with Patton to blast proposal

Mayor Tom Perciak wants to nip in the bud a controversial proposal by state officials to take over municipal income tax collections. Perciak is inviting other mayors in the 24th State Senate District to join him at Strongsville City Hall March 6 to tell State Sen. Tom Patton how they feel. "We do not need the state collecting our income tax dollars and disbursing them as they see fit," Perciak said. In October, Strongsville joined other area cities in passing a resolution opposing the proposal, which aimed to simplify tax returns for small businesses that have operations in different locations by having a state-run agency collect city income taxes. Strongsville argued in the resolution that income tax is a city's biggest source of revenue …

Pearl Road Officially Opens with Ribbon Cutting

Widening is celebrated by dozens of local officials

Never mind that cars have been driving on the freshly paved lanes for days now. Pearl Road officially reopened this morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by city, county and state officials. "Pearl Road South is a reality," Mayor Tom Perciak declared shortly before opening a wider roadway that is expected to better serve retailers and commuters, improve drainage and give better access to undeveloped industrial land. Police stopped traffic briefly while a series of orange construction barrels were linked together with green and white ribbons, which were cut by Perciak, State Sen. Tom Patton, State Rep. Mike Dovilla, County ExecutiveEd FitzGerald and others. Crews have spent more than a year widening the road from where it narrowed…
