Police received a complaint about a woman who approached school bus drivers May 17 and asked if they knew any pregnant girls who wanted to give up their babies. The woman drove off, but police were able to track her down. The woman said she was concerned about teenage abortion and wanted to make sure girls at Strongsville High School had the right information. She was told to speak with the principal or superintendent if she wanted to pass along any more information. Roadside Demonstration Employees at Sheetz called police shortly before midnight May 19 after a group of about five teens set up lawn chairs at the corner of Prospect and Royalton Roads and yelled "white power" at passing traffic. A shopper at Walmart thought he was being careful when he bought a $100 gift card from another customer for $50 about 10:30 p.m. May 10. The shopper took the card to a cashier, who confirmed there was, in fact, $100 on the card. But when he tried to use it to make a purchase later, he discoverd the seller had switched cards, giving him one with no value instead of the one with $100. Drama at the Dance Police were called to Michaud's about 9:30 p.m. May 11 after a scuffle between two girls. The victim told police she accidentally stepped on another girl's dress, and the girl pushed her, causing her to stumble. The victim said she was pregnant and suffering stomach pain. A Glendale Avenue man reported hearing a man screaming about 9:45 p.m. May 6. Police were able to locate a man screaming from an upstairs bedroom of a house, but no one would come to the door. Neighbors said a man does live in the house. Burglary Attempt A Greenbrier Drive resident came home from work about 6:30 p.m. May 7 to find someone had tampered with the screens on his front window. No entry was made, but neighbors have reported similar incidents, he said. Odd Situation Police found a car in the parking lot in front of Pier 1 with both passenger doors standing open about 5:45 p.m. May 7. A homeless man who was told last week to pack up his tent and leave the wooded area near the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center returned a few days later, a report said. On May 7, police found the man had again pitched a tent behind the rec center. He was taken into custody for trespassing. On May 3, the man's campsite was discovered when his cooking fire set the surrounding area ablaze. He was warned then to find another place to stay. Strange Find Underground Police were called to Royalton Road May 7 after someone found a suspicious bag in an underground vault, a report said. Strongsville police officers recover truck, but suspects flee on foot
Someone rammed a truck into the front of the Convenient food store, 22933 Sprague Rd., early May 7 and stole an ATM, according to police. A similar incident took place about the same time at a BP station in Westlake, police said. Strongsville police said the pickup backed through the front window of the store about 4:25 a.m. and someone loaded the ATM into the back of the truck. The truck took off south on Marks Road, but had suffered a flat tire in the collision with the store. The suspects abandoned the truck on Christopher Court and ran away. A Ridge Creek Road resident told polic she arrived home about 6:30 p.m. May 3 to find someone had entered her house through a dining room window. All her jewelry was missing, a report said. Unlocked Cars At least four cars were entered on two successive nights, according to reports. On Chevy Chase, someone went through two cars in a driveway the night of May 3, but only change was taken. The next night, a purse was taken from a car parked in a Forestview Drive driveway. A fire in a wooded area behind the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center May 3 led officials to discover someone has been living back there. Firefighters were called to smoke on the east side of the building about 9:40 a.m. and reported to police that there was someone living there. Officers located a man walking to the area, who admitted to having a fort and cooking. The said he believed he had gotten permission to camp there. He agreed to gather up his belongings and move on. A cab driver asked police for help after dropping off a fare on Gold Rush Drive who walked away without paying about 3 a.m. April 30. Police checked the house, and found the man never went inside -- just walked past. A police dog was called in, who successfully tracked the man to a house on Golden Star Drive. The guy's father paid the cabbie, who didn't seek charges. Police Department's annual report shows a significant decrease in many offenses
Burglaries, break-ins and thefts from vehicles all decreased in 2012, according to the Strongsville Police Department's annual report. The report also shows a drop in auto theft and vandalism. Why? Difficult to say, according to Police Chief James Kobak, but an active patrol seems to make a difference. Kobak said he believes having police officers visible in the neighborhoods -- patrolling and enforcing traffic laws -- has an effect on crime in a community. "If somebody is thinking about committing a crime and they see a police officer in the neighborhood, I think that acts as a big deterrent," Kobak said.
