'Obama Lady' Makes a Stand in Strongsville

Political activist take her message to the street

Motorists on Royalton Road in Strongsville might have glimpsed Kathy Furz on Tuesday as she strolled along Route 82 wearing neck-to-foot Obama campaign signs. "I've done this my entire life," said Furz, who lives in Strongsville. "I'm getting a lot of support. One guy all but leaped out of his car, though, and said if I didn't leave he'd make me." A member of the Clinton-Gore advance team for nine years, Furz grew up in a political household and feels strongly President Obama "is for all the people -- not just 53 percent." Plenty of drivers honked their horns and gave a thumbs-up to Furz as she stood at the I-71 interchange on Election Day. Plenty of others honked and offered a less friendly gesture. "Obama's worthless," one guy yelled. …

Big Voter Turnout in Strongsville

Polls busy this morning as people stop to cast ballots before work

Editor's Note: If you haven't voted yet, check Strongsville Patch for a rundown of what you'll see on the ballot. Tonight, we'll post results as they come in. It may be a good thing some 10,000 people in Strongsville voted absentee this year. Polling places were humming with a steady stream of voters this morning, and lines greeted some during the early hours. "When we opened (at 6:30 a.m.), they were lined up already," said Allan Hamula, poll location coordinator at the Strongsville Communication Center. "We were slammed right away." Mark Anguilano cast his ballot about 8:30 a.m. "I'm hands-on. I like to vote in person," Anguilano said. "I don't do things online if I don't have to. I lost $40 in cyberspace once and it's not going to …

Haven't Voted Yet? You're in the Minority

More than 9,000 Strongsville residents have already cast their ballots

People who go to the polls on Election Day have quickly become the minority in Strongsville. A report from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections shows that as of Friday, 12,351 Strongsville residents had requested absentee ballots for the Nov. 6 general election, and 9,196 had already returned them. More are certain to come in this week.  While turnout at the polls on Tuesday isn't yet known, it's clear a significant percentage of Strongsville voters will cast ballots by mail in this Presidential election. Typically, 11,000 to 14,000 voters cast ballots in Strongsville. As a comparison, a total of 13,637 people voted on a renewal levy for the Strongsville schools in the March primary election. Of the 12,351 absentee ballots requested, 4…

Superintendent Pounds the Pavement for School Bond Issue

Krupinski joins volunteers in door-to-door campaign

Superintendent John Krupinksi took the school district's message to the streets last weekend, joining volunteers going door-to-door to campaign for Issue 116 , the $81 million bond issue to build and repair school buildings. Krupinski said he was heartened by the positive feedback he got in the Olympia development for older adults. "There were many people who said they always support the schools," he said. "And once others learned the facts of the issue, they said they would vote for it." Krupinski also met Monday night with City Council members to explain the bond issue, which would allow the district to build a $46 million middle school on the site of the current 104-year-old Center Middle School ; make $26 million in building and …

Rezoning Goes to November Ballot

Approval would allow Kemper House to expand

Voters will see a rezoning issue on the Nov. 6 ballot that would allow Kemper House, 10890 Prospect Rd., to expand. Company president Betty Kemper said she wants to add another 18 suites to the Alzheimer's care facility by purchasing an adjacent lot. "We have had a waiting list for a very long time," she told City Council Monday night. She is seeking to have the lot next door rezoned from R1 (single-family residential) to Senior Residence. In Strongsville, voters must approve any rezoning from residential to another use. The issue must pass citywide and in the ward. At a public hearing Monday, one resident spoke against the plan. Sheldon Bloch, who owns property abutting the Kemper House site, said he wanted more information on buffering …

Who Did Strongsville Pick for President?

Here are the results of Republican primary voting

In Ohio, Mitt Romney won by a hair over Rick Santorum at the polls Tuesday. In Cuyahoga County -- and Strongsville -- it was more like a full head. Romney garnered just under 49 percent of the vote in the county, while Santorum got about 30 percent. Newt Gingrich followed with 12 percent, and Ron Paul received a little under 9 percent. Strongsville followed the same pattern. Unofficial results from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections show Romney took about 49 percent of the vote in Strongsville, compared to Santorum's 31 percent. Gingrich piled up 13 percent of the Strongsville votes; Paul got 7 percent here.

Final: Giant Eagle Rezoning Approved Citywide and in Ward 2

Voters clear way for Market District on Pearl Road

Voters citywide and in Ward 2 supported a rezoning at the polls Tuesday that clears the way for Giant Eagle to build an upscale Market District supermarket on Pearl Road. Issue 4, which rezones a portion of the Strongsville Golf property from residential to business, was approved 7,840 to 5,221 citywide, according to unofficial results from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.  It was also approved 2,135 to 1,626 in Ward 2, precinct breakdowns show. The issue failed in only two of the nine precincts in Ward 2 -- 2B (190 yes, 199 no) and 2E (101 yes and 177 no). It also lost by one vote in precinct 1G. Residents in Hunting Meadows, which abuts the Strongsville Golf site, have opposed the project, saying it will lower their home values …

Ok... not happy about this, but it's a democracy and the people have spoken. Now I just hope that my councilman, Mr. Schonhut, who lives in Hunting Meadows will do what he can to ensure that the cut through streets (Park Lane/Quail Hollow to Lanier to Hunting Meadows to Shurmer to Pearl) are safe for the Hunting Meadows residents- especially the children.   more ›
