Walgreens leery after Parma store held up
Employees at Walgreens, 19980 W. 130th St., asked police to stand by Jan. 24 after getting a phone call from someone asking for the prescription painkiller Opana. The employees feared the caller was checking to see if the store had the drug in stock before robbing it. A Walgreens in Parma was robbed of prescription drugs Jan. 20. Police in Parma believe the same man may also be responsible for a robbery at a Rite Aid store in that city on Jan. 4. In the Walgreens robbery in Parma, the suspect wore a hooded sweatshirt with the hood up and held out a blue plastic bag while demanding specific pain medications.

Dispute started over parking space
Witnesses called police to a fight outside Westfield SouthPark mall about 6 p.m. Saturday after one man pulled a gun on another driver. The man with the gun, 45, of Brunswick, was arrested while still at the mall. He faces an assault charge. Police said the man did not fire the gun, but hit the victim in the head with it. Detective Lt. John Janowski said the dispute started when the suspect, driving a pickup truck, overshot a parking space and tried to back up. The victim, 30, driving behind the truck, refused to back up far enough and instead beeped his horn. The suspect then got out of his truck, pulled out a gun and hit the victim in the head with it. Witnesses ran into Coldwater Creek to ask employees to call 911, a report said. The …

Arrests made before any merchandise is stolen
Two men were tossed out of Dillard's Sept. 2 for stealing. Not clothes, not jewelry. Plastic bags. It's a frequent shoplifting method, especially at malls like Westfield SouthPark, police say -- would-be shoplifters grab bags from a store and then fill them with merchandise at other shops. "They look for stores with open (cashier) kiosks, rather than at Sears, where the cashiers stand in an enclosed square," Detective Lt. John Janowski said. "You can just walk right past and grab the bags." On July 8, when a man was spotted stealing plastic bags from behind a counter at Dillard's, employees called police, who apprehended the man in the mall. The bags contained no merchandise, but the store said it would prosecute for the theft of the bags…

Store that carries 'incense' and 'bath salts' entered for fourth time in a year
Twilight Boutique, 11025 Prosepct Road, was broken into eary Monday morning -- for the second time this week and the fourth time in a year. A report said an alarm went off shortly before 5 a.m. Police arrived to find the back door pried open. On Aug. 28, someone smashed the front glass of the business and took items from inside. The store sells products like K2 and K3, marketed as "herbal incense," but often rolled into cigarettes and smoked by teens and young adults for what they call a "legal high." The leafy material in the packets is treated with chemicals that produce a marijuana-like high when smoked, authorities say. Also available there are the so-called "bath salts," which also provide a high when snorted. Someone also threw a …

Husband and wife team face felony after grab-and-dash
A husband and wife have been indicted for stealing a $9,000 ruby-and-diamond necklace from Macy's at Westfield SouthPark May 5. Sean and Sarah O'Connor, both 28, were charged with grand theft, Detective Lt. John Janowski said. The pair was identified after police released a surveillance video taken at Macy's that showed the suspects in the theft. "We got a lot of tips from people who knew who they were," Janowski said. "It turned out, they'd been arrested the night before for a theft in Richmond Heights." The necklace has been recovered. Janowski said the couple admitted to pawning it in Avon, and it was still at the shop. Police said the couple went into Macy's about 5 p.m. and hung around the jewelry counter, telling the clerk they were …
