Now's the time to ask for money for that and other road projects, Strongsville councilman says
A Strongsville City Councilman is urging the city to make a "wish list" of road projects -- including an I-71 interchange at Boston Road -- that might snare a share of an estimated $1.5 billion generated when Ohio issues bonds on the turnpike. "I think what we have is a golden opportunity," Councilman at large Duke Southworth said. "I think a lot of towns are going to be lining up with their hands out." Strongsville needs to be in that line, Southworth said. "We need to be vocal and aggressive and see how much money we can get back into Strongsville," he said. Yes, Even an Interchange Southworth said the city needs to clear up traffic congestion on Royalton Road area near I-71, and believes now may be the time to revive 30-year-old …

New system would make traffic flow smoother, official says
Strongsville will seek a grant from the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency to upgrade nearly every traffic signal in town. City Engineer Ken Mikula said it's been more than a decade since the signals were last updated -- a project that replaced wires with mast arms, added traffic-detecting equipment and synchronized lights with others in the area. The new project would install LED lights and a camera system to detect traffic. It would also synchronize all signals on a master controller, instead of four separate systems in use now. "It would be similar to what we did (last year) on Pearl Road," Mikula said. Four intersections on Pearl Road got state-of-the-art traffic signals with video technology as part of the widening project…

If you could pick one for the city, what would you choose?
If you could pick a New Year's Resolution for the city of Strongsville, what would it be? We posted the quesiton on our Facebook page today and got a few answers already, including: "14 new lanes of traffic on Royalton Rd. to handle the influx of holiday motorists" "Fix the traffic problems (they are only going to get worse, especially with the new Giant Eagle coming) AND for the winter months, have snowplow drivers be respectful of cleared sidewalks. So tired of digging out the bus stop." Any other suggestions for the city? Post them in the Comments section below.

Street will link the Plaza at SouthPark with Ledgewood Plaza, Falling Water Drive
Work is under way on an access road that will link the Plaza at SouthPark with the adjacent Ledgewood Square and Borders plaza. Visconsi Companies, which owns the Plaza at SouthPark, is building a 450-foot road that will run behind Ledgewood Square and connect with the driveway at the Borders Plaza. Traffic will be able to get in and out using the Borders driveway -- it aligns with an entrance to SouthPark Mall -- or can continue west through the parking lot and use Falling Water Drive. The aim is to alleviate traffic tie-ups at Royalton and Howe roads -- in particular, eastbound traffic that stacks up on Route 82 trying to turn left into the Plaza at SouthPark. The signal at the Borders driveway -- which currently lets only about six …

Long-discussed plan for new on-ramps would alleviate a lot of traffic problems, officials say
A plan for a new I-71 interchange at Boston Road -- an on-again, off-again idea that's been bandied around for more than two decades -- should be considered again, a Strongsville official says. Council President Mike Daymut suggested setting up a meeting with Brunswick leaders to revive a local push for the interchange. "I want to resurrect those meetings with Brunswick," Daymut said. He made the suggestion at a meeting to discuss traffic tie-ups in Strongsville last week. Royalton Road is Strongsville's accident hotspot, with 38 percent of all crashes reported in the city last year taking place on that road -- most near I-71, according to police department figures. In the 1980s and 1990s, the two cities made a major push to get an …

You're right, there sure is -- check out these numbers
Does it ever seem like every driver in Strongsville and Brunswick is in front of you when you're trying to get through the Howe-Royalton area? Almost. Figures show that a whopping 54,000 vehicles a day go through that intersection, many headed to I-71 or the shopping district. Even more travel the Pearl-Royalton intersection -- more than 56,000 a day. Compare that to the intersection at Great Northern Mall at I-480, which only sees 36,000 vehicles a day. The mayor says the sheer volume of traffic makes it tricky to fix traffic tie-ups here. City Council is expected tonight to look at ways to improve traffic flow at various trouble spots. "We do know where our bottlenecks are, and where we have issues," Mayor Tom Perciak said. But …

There already is traffic on residential streets. People from south Strongsville are cramming onto Howe and continuing on to Drake, Boston, etc. to get home. At least the new interchange would relieve most of the Howe problem and stop the dangerous backups at 71 and 82. There will be serious and even deadly accidents there if we don't address that exit.   more ›
