Picketer Arrested for Blocking Driveway

Incident happened at Center Middle School

  Strongsville police arrested a picketer outside Center Middle School early Wednesday morning for allegedly blocking cars from entering the driveway. Ian Steffen, 37, of Medina was warned about blocking the driveway several times over the, police said. "Mr. Steffen reportedly continued to attempt to impede traffic in the area of Center Middle School after receiving repeated audible direction from a uniformed officer," a statement from Strongsville police said. He was arrested about 5:35 a.m. and charged with disorderly conduct. It was the second vehicle-picketer incident reported to police in the first three days of a teachers' strike.  On Tuesday, a teacher at Kinsner said a car grazed her as she was trying to get out of the way. Strike Sympathizers Get Message from School Board

Absences of non-union employees won't be tolerated, resolution says

  Strongsville school leaders are making it clear that if teachers strike March 4, other employees are expected to cross the picket lines and report to work. The School Board passed a resolution Thursday night that says in the event of a work stoppage, all other employee absences must be substantiated by written proof, and that unauthorized absence could lead to dismissal, disciplinary action and/or loss of pay and benefits. "It basically gives the superintendent authority to enforce our policies during a strike," Board President David Frazee said. "If you're going to take sick leave, you have to have a legitimate medical excuse -- that kind of thing." The strike resolution says unauthorized leave would include "individual and/or …
