Update: Student's 'Threat' at High School Not an Actual Threat

19-year-old from North Royalton faces charge in related case

The Strongsville High School did not make a threat about violence at the high school, but passed along information indicating someone else might become violent there.

That other person, a 19-year-old North Royalton man, has been charged with aggravated menacing for threatening a Strongsville girl, according to Police Chief Charles Goss.

The school was not involved in the threat.

Here's how it unfolded: The 19-year-old and a girl from Strongsville got into a heated Facebook debate about the shootings Monday at Chardon High School.

The North Royalton man obtained the girl's phone number, called it and threatened to harm her, Goss said.

The 17-year-old Strongsville High School boy heard about the incident and posted on his Facebook page that the 19-year-old was coming to the school to carry out his threat against the girl.

"None of these people made any threat against the school," Goss said.

The North Royalton man was arraigned this morning on the menacing charge.

The 17-year-old was taken out of school Tuesday and charged with inducing panic.

Goss said the youth posted the message without knowing whether it was true and caused concern for other students.

He said the way authorities prevent incidents like the Chardon shootings is to "pick up cues before they happen."

"When people make irresponsible claims, it really impedes our ability to ferret out real signals," Goss said. "It makes it more difficult to detect legitimate red flags."
