3 Months Later, Strongsville Does Weigh Less

Winners announced in get-fit contest

The results are in for , a citywide get-fit initiative sponsored by the Strongsville Women's League, and it appears nearly everyone ended up losing weight and getting at least a bit healthier.

Overall, the 153 participants lost 4 percent of their collective body weight, according to Beverly Kenworthy, who organized the initiative.

"The people who were in it said they liked it and felt it was helpful," Kenworthy said.

The program started with a weigh-in back in January and included a series of talks and demonstrations on healthy eating and exercise. The point of the program was to offer motivation, support and camaraderie for those trying to get in better shape, Kenworthy said.

The male winner in weight loss is Brad Handlin, who shed 15 percent of his body weight in three months.

Female winner is Jamie Merkle, who lost 12 percent. 

In the group category, the four members of Lettuce Begin dropped a total of 64 pounds.

The winners were recognized at the Strongsville Women's League's April 16 event, Celebrate & Dance to the Music.

Kenworthy said the group is planning to repeat the program next year.
