A Major Change for Lighting Ceremony This Year

Strongsville will kick off the holiday season a little earlier than usual

Strongsville's lighting ceremony — traditionally held the day after Thanksgiving — will instead take place a few days earlier this year.

Mayor Tom Perciak said the event, which the official kickoff of the holiday season in Strongsville, is set for 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24.

The reason? Thanksgiving falls late this year.

"We're moving it up so the merchants have four full weeks of the festivities here in town," Perciak said.

Thanksgiving falls on Nov. 28 this year.

"That means we wouldn't be kicking off the holiday season till Nov. 29, and that's only three weeks before Christmas," the mayor said.

Switching to the weekend before Thanksgiving also lets families who travel out of town for the holiday attend the lighting ceremony on the City Commons, and — without Black Friday traffic — will make it easier to get there and find parking, he said.

Perciak also promised "some new surprises" at the event this year.
