This splendidly entertaining fictional biography of Doc Holliday by local author Mary Doria Russell lays many of the dime store myths to rest about this participant in the OK Corral Shootout.  Western buffs and non-western readers alike will find Doc to be a great story well told.

Pirate King By Laurie King, September 2011, 304 pages.

This is the latest adventure of Mary Russell and her husband Sherlock Holmes.  In this amusing adventure, Mary is sent to investigate rumors of criminal activity around Fflyte Films, a silent film company attempting to make a film based on The Pirates of Penzance, but with real pirates, and the shooting isn’t only done with cameras.

Unlikely Friendships: 47 Remarkable Stories from the Animal Kingdom By Jennifer Holland, June 2011, 210 pages.

Any animal lover will be amused and amazed with the 47 stories of unusual trans-species friendships depicted in photos and words. Koko and her kitten is the best known tale in the group, but then there’s the story about a leopard and a cow, and a three-way friendship between a rhino, a warthog and a hyena.  You’re sure to have a favorite anecdote.
