Altenheim Medical Director Named 'Best Doctor'

William D. Smucker recognized with national honor

William D. Smucker M.D., Medical Director of , has been named one of the Best Doctors in America®.

Smucker was recognized in several specialties including geriatric medicine, geriatric medicine/hospice and palliative care, and family medicine.

Best Doctors in America® are chosen by their peers. Physicians participating in the selection process answer a series of survey questions, including “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?”

Smucker and local peers who were recognized with this honor were featured in the March 2012 edition of Cleveland Magazine.

“Dr. Smucker helps make Altenheim the great facility it is today,” said Paul Psota, Altenheim CEO.  “Our staff benefits greatly from his knowledge and guidance, and our residents really like him too.”

Smucker has served as medical director and primary care physician at Altenheim for 30 years.

He was previously recognized as a Best Doctor in America® from 2002-2009, and was also named a “Top Doctor” In Northeast Ohio in 2002-2006. 

In addition to his Altenheim duties, Smucker is Clinical Director of the Family Medicine Clinical Research Center for Summa Health System, and is a member of the teaching faculty.

Altenheim and Shurmer Place at Altenheim is a 210-bed nonprofit continuing care retirement community community on a 16-acre campus in Strongsville. It provides short-term rehabilitation and therapy services; long term nursing care; Alzheimer’s and dementia care; and assisted and independent living services and accommodations.

The organization was established by a group of German-American women in 1887. Altenheim Nursing Home opened its doors in 1892.
