Ballistics By D.W. Wilson, June 2013, 400 pages.

In this debut novel set in the Canadian Rockies during a forest fire, a dying request from the grandfather who raised him has Alan West tracking down his elusive father, who skipped town before Alan could even walk. His quest leads him to Archer Cole who fled the United States decades ago with his teenage daughter to avoid a second tour of duty in Vietnam. Through Archer, Alan hears the tale of how two broken families came together and then fell apart. Fans of C.J. Box might like to give this book a try.

Kiss Me First By Lottie Moggach, July 2013, 320 pages.

This coming of age story follows Leila – a sheltered young woman who can’t seem to find herself and struggles to connect with the girls in her school. When she discovers the online chat website, Red Pill, and meets the found of the website, a brilliant man named Adrian, Leila finally feels like she belongs. Adrian recruits Leila to help him with Project Tess and he entices her into assuming the stolen identity of a beautiful yet desperate woman. Fans of psychological thriller novels will certainly devour this debut novel.

The Lemon Orchard By Luanne Rice, July 2013, 304 pages.

Julia has recently experienced a terrible loss with the death of her daughter. She wishes for complete isolation and solitude by house sitting for her aunt and uncle at their home in the Santa Monica Mountains. While there she comes upon Roberto, who is a caretaker for the lemon orchard on the property. He takes great care of the trees and sends his earnings back to his extended family in Mexico. Julia and Roberto share a connection, for Roberto has a lost a daughter too. The main difference between the two is that Roberto’s daughter was lost but never found. This novel takes on themes of family, love, redemption, and romance while bringing together two people who typically wouldn’t be connected. If you haven’t read Luanne Rice and you’re a Kristin Hannah fan, it’s time to give Rice a chance.
