Lighthouse Island By Paulette Jiles, October 2013, 382 pages.

While the author’s previous three novels are set in the American past, this poetic dystopian novel is set 150 years into the future.  Water is severely rationed.  There is no greenery and animals are rare. Most people numb the pain of their daily lives by watching hours of television, but orphaned Nadia seeks solace in books. When she hears an advertisement for a luxury vacation spot, Lighthouse Island, she sets out on a mission to escape to see it for herself. Along the way she meets crippled demolitionist, who joins her and they change each other's lives in unexpected ways.  Recommended for readers who loved The Road by Cormac McCarthy or Wool by Hugh Howey.

Our Picnics in the Sun By Morag Jess, November 2013, 352 pages.

Howard and Deborah Morgan have poured all their energy and life savings into Stoneyridge, a small cottage deep in the English moors.  What they thought would offer them a life of comfort and solitude has actually turned into a financial burden.  With the hopes of some financial security they decide to turn their cottage into a bed and breakfast.  Their plans hit a major snag when Howard suffers a major stroke.  Then late one night, two strangers in the night arrive and they’re desperate for a room.  This sets off a chain of events that will leave you not wanting to book the book down.  This is a story about the secrets we keep and what happens when those secrets come to light.  Fans of Barbara Vine and Ruth Rendell will appreciate this book.

Top Down: a Novel By Jim Lehrer, October 2013, 224 pages.

This year mark’s the 50th anniversary of the JFK Assassination.  This book is a riveting new novel about a Secret Service Agent, Van Walters, who makes a terrible mistake by letting President Kennedy ride in the motorcade in Dallas with the top down which ultimately leads to Kennedy’s assassination.  Walters is ravaged by guilt and has lost his will to live.  Walter’s daughter enlists the help of a young reporter to help prove that the assassination of Kennedy would have happened even if Walters didn’t make that fateful decision.  This is a page-turning historical novel and it will surely please readers who enjoy reading about President Kennedy and that fateful day.
