Gun Found Outside Dillard's and Possible Owner Found Hiding Under Car

The following information was provided by the Strongsville police department

A shopper found a handgun in a potted plant outside the Howe Road entrance to Dillard's Saturday evening, about the same time someone else reported a suspicious man in the SouthPark Mall parking lot.

The man was discovered hiding under an SUV and arrested on an outstanding felony warrant for receiving stolen property.

Police said the man denied owning the .22-cal. handgun, even though he was found to have bullets of that same caliber in his pocket.

"He told us he didn't know why he had bullets in his pocket," Detective Lt. John Janowski said.

Reports show someone called police about 5:30 p.m. to report finding the gun; about the same time, someone else reported seeing a man walking around the mall parking lot, looking into cars.

Officers checked the lot and found the man hiding under a vehicle. Police determined he was wanted by Cleveland Heights.

He was arrested on the warrant and turned over to police in that city.

Police here are investigating whether that he is also the person who brought the gun to the mall.

Darn it! Why can't I be the one to find a gun? Seriously-another good reason to show children the NRA's safety video "Eddie Eagle", which teaches kids who find a gun to: 1.STOP! 2 Don't touch! 3 Leave the area & tell an adult.

How can the mall area be protected from these dangerous situations? Can we have external cameras ?

An "external camera"(or the police, for that matter) CANNOT protect you. Why don't you learn how to protect YOURSELF?!

You can't protect yourself when you go to the Mall. It's clearly marked 'no handguns on premises'. Only criminals can and do carry in and around the mall, usually without worry. This guy got caught but there are probably dozens others no one knows about. You may protect yourself once you get to your car, but only if you have license to carry, then all bets are off it's YOU vs the 'bad guy', hopefully you win.

So every time some brat gets mad at a teacher or custodian, all he has to do is start a gun rumor and the person gets fired. Great set up.
