A short manhunt and some quick thinking by police officers led to the arrest of a man who allegedly shoved his 90-year-old mother to the floor, tore up her apartment and threatened to kill her with her cane.
The incident happened Dec. 26 at Westwood Place.
The suspect's brother reported the violence after their mother called him about 10 p.m.
Another witness also reported seeing a suspicious man in the Westwood Place lobby just before the incident. That caller said the man was aggressive and had a black gun in his waistband.
Police checked the cemetery, City Commons and other nearby areas for the suspect. They then called a cab company and learned a driver had picked up the man at and was on his way to Cleveland.
Dispatchers asked the driver to slow down until police could catch up with them. The driver eventually stopped on Fulton Road, telling his passenger he had to check his trunk for a lost wallet.
Police from Strongsville and Cleveland arrived on the scene and made the arrest.
No weapon was found.
