Police Blotter: Grandma Doesn't Fall for 'Peru' Scam

The following information was provided by the Strongsville police department

A Strongsville grandma was targeted by a scam in which a caller pretends to be a grandchild in trouble.

The woman received a call Dec. 5 from someone claiming to be her grandson, asking for money because he was in jail in Peru.

She didn't fall for it. Her grandson called police asking for advice on what he should tell his grandmother about calls like that.

Police gave him the number for the Ohio attorney general's office.

Another Scam

A Doria Court woman gave her checking account number to someone over the phone, then later realized it was probably a scam.

The woman said she heard from a friend later that the call was a scam regarding a medical card, and the callers take money out of your account.

She went to the bank to cancel her account, a report said.

Out of the Way

A man driving on Webster Road about 9:30 p.m. Dec. 5 when two males jumped in front of his car.

He stopped, and the pair got into a white SUV and headed to Timberlane Drive.

Burglary Feared

A Tradewinds Drive man reported Dec. 8 that his garage door opened for no apparent readon the night before.

He said he is afraid someone was going through the area trying garage doors in order to pick houses to burglarize later.

Police checked and found the house secure at that time.

Bus Vs. Sign

A school bus took out the stop sign at Jonathan and Ashwood about 6:45 a.m. Dec. 5, a report said.

A resident heard a loud noise and looked outside to see the sign gone. A dispatcher called the school garage to see if everyone was okay.

An officer put the sign back and and noted tire marks that looked like they were from a bus.

The transportation office called back to say the bus did hit the sign. The bus suffered no damage.
