Stove Fire Causes $25,000 Damage to Strongsville Home

Fire department says hot oil caused blaze on Meadows Edge

A kitchen fire on Tuesday caused an estimated $25,000 in damage to a home at 21564 Meadows Edge, according to Assistant Fire Chief Jack Draves.

Draves said the fire started when a resident became distracted while pre-heating oil on the stove.

She was alerted to the blaze by the sound of breaking glass in the microwave, and was able to extinguish most of the fire herself before she called 911, a news release said.

The call came in at 8:57 p.m., with the first firefighters arriving three minutes later.

Draves said 13 firefighters and five vehicles responded and extinguished the rest of the fire. A thermal imaging camera was used to keep structural damage to a minimum, he said.

Firefighters also ventilated the structure to clear it of smoke, heat and other fire gases.  Residents were able to remain in the home after the fire.

The woman who found the blaze did suffer a minor injury, but did not require transport to the hospital.

To handle grease fires, cover the fire with a lid and turn off the burner, Draves said.

Never throw water on a grease fire because the fire can flash and spread throughout the kitchen. Call for help immediately.
