Strongsville's Scholtz Misses Out On State Title

Mustang senior wrestler reaches second round consolations.

The Strongsville Mustangs fielded one wrestler at this past weekend’s OHSAA Division I State Wrestling Championships and came away without earning a top-eight placing.

Senior Kevin Scholtz (28-14 record entering state) started off with an opening round 9-4 decision loss to Twinsburg junior Mike Labry (35-1). Labry would eventually finish the state tournament in third place. In the consolation bracket, Scholtz shutout senior Isaiah Brunner of Pickerington Central, 7-0 by decision, but would lose his next – and final– match. In the second round consolations, senior Dan McNulty of Mayfield ended Scholtz’s day by topping the Mustang senior via decision, 6-2.

Coach Jerry Desforges’ team of one finished tied for 73rd  overall with one point, well-behind winner Lakewood St. Edward (187 points). Massillon Perry (109), Wadsworth (96), Cincinnati Elder (72), and Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller (66) round out the top five.
