Heading out to the today?
You can pick up a few items to help hungry people as the National Association of Letter Carriers holds its 20th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive on Saturday.
Donating food is about as easy as it gets. Put the non-perishable food you're donating into a bag. Leave it by the mailbox before your mail carrier gets there on Saturday. Done.
The donated food will be delivered to area food banks.
What foods should you donate? Here are some suggestions:
- Pasta and rice
- Canned soup
- Canned beef stew, meats or fish
- Canned fruits and vegetables
- Peanut butter
- Boxed goods such as cereal
In 2011's Stamp Out Hunger, mail carriers collected 70.2 million pounds of food. Since Stamp Out Hunger began in 1992, 1.1 billion pounds of food have been collected.
According to the Department of Agriculture, 49 million Americans live in "food-insecure" households. Food insecurity is defined as limited or uncertain access to safe, nutritious food.
Of those 49 million living with food insecurity, one in five of them are children.
